megamike Never got a chance to join the club... My fuel gauge said 1/2 tank once and I put 13 gallons into it. After that happened I said eff that. Now I reset my mileage and fill up every time I hit 100 miles.

michaelgerson I'm in the club too. 92YJ. Thought I had plenty of fuel, but was climbing up the Grapevine and found out the hard way that on a sharp angle, pump stops picking up fuel. Had at least three gallons left. Now I always reset trip odometer every fill and figure a conservative range of 200 miles. Also carry two gallons for emergency. It's a Jeep thing, but I still love it. Just turned 185,000 and runs strong. Wants to go 85-90 on Highway 5. Also know that keeping it at 65-70 helps get to 17-18mpg. Flat windshield kills performance at high speeds.

Mbclark I'm jumping in a bit late and this may have been addressed but is there any damage to the skidplate that may be pushing up on the tank? I put a small dent in mine once, enough to push on the plastic tank a bit and it messed with the accuracy of the gauge, showed 1/4 and was empty. Pulled the plate, pounded it out and it was good to go.

The gas is what keeps the pump cool also, this is why the pump is submerged in the tank

thanks,I thought so......I cut a fuel pump open once to see why it failed and found that the small key that holds the impellar to the shaft was sheared,i was surprised at how tiny this piece was.....

Peepers I think I drove about 30-40 miles after the needle stopped moving up when I started the jeep and only put in 18 gallons. I must be one of the lucky ones...

I usually fill it around 1/3 tank.

jfbilbro paulpa, you are right in assuming that a dry tank is harmful to the pump...gas is what lubricates the pump and trying to crank any engine with an empty tank will burn up the pump..

paulpa when I had my yj Iran out of gas a few times and noticed this seemed to have a bad effect on my fuel pump,replaced two of them,was that just a coincidence?I dont think so,I think running that pump dry hastens it"s failure.Any opinions?Am I right in assuming this?

We all know you need to top it off every few miles.. Our gas milage is so great.

Plumber1 Join the crowd of 1/4 full jeepers. Mine has always run out at 1/4, don't know why buy I have heard this many times from other YJ owners.

Bkarst I have had a similar issue, when mine gets around 1/4 tank and I take a sharp turn, it's like I just ran out of gas and a few seconds of coasting and everything is back to normal. It's like a built in retard switch that slaps you in the face saying "time for gas". lol

Depends on where Jupiter is with respect to the Earth-Mars vector, apparently... Just this weekend i had it buried in the red, with the light on for 10 miles before getting to a gas station, and it took 11.3 gallons (19 gal tank). Other times i've put 15 gallons in when it was just below 1/4 tank on the gauge.

NHrubicon With winter coming on, it's good advice to keep the gas tank FULL, never let it get below half a tank. Otherwise you get condensation (WATER) in the gas tank and eventually you'll be down to the bottom of the tank and start sucking it up. So good rule of thumb...down a 1/4 tank, get it filled! Less shock at the price that way also.

Thanks! I am not messing with the fuel sending unit. I will keep track by miles as well. It doesn't go below 1/4 tank but goes up to full when I fill it up.

sevenservices dang, something is up with your guage I would think... does it ever change or is it stuck on 1/4?

I was always told with a Jeep, when it says E its EMPTY. No going under the E with this one!!! I imagined that was your issue until I read further on.

kik These gauges are known to not be too accurate. I believe in my owner's manual for my 89 it's supposed to be accurate to within 1/4 tank. That's not an excuse. Some are more accurate than others. You'll probably notice that when it's full it's past the full mark. Some register by almost another 1/4 tank. You could go through the headache of dropping the tank and replacing the sending unit but that might cause many additional problems. I would recommend you leave it alone and treat the 1/4 mark as "empty".

Ran out of gas???

So I was driving my son to daycare today and realized I was losing power. I would lose all power going up a hill. Sat for a minute, and then finally made it up the hill but came to a stop again. Finally realized I was out of gas even though it showed I still had 1/4 tank. What the?? Called my dad and he drove me a couple gallons over and was on my way. Is this normal? Anyway to fix this?
