Have you checked the oil level with the dipstick, have you tried revving the engine in neutral to recreate the sound? Does this noise always happen or only sometimes? How certain are you this noise is related to the engine? Does is get faster or more noticeble based on engine speed or car speed?
There is plenty of oil, it makes the sound while idling and it always happens. From start up to shut down. It increases speed with acceleration

JeepNamedTJ It also makes the tick at all times. Worse almost when warm. It's getting annoying

JeepNamedTJ I believe the noise is coming from under the valve cover. When idling it is a prominent tick. Is there a common problem under the cover? When should I take a look(oil change etc.)? What will I be looking for?

C.L. Nipples (zerks) are sold by the dozen in any automotive store. Usually by the grease guns. I haven't seen boots there, you may have to order them specific to the component that needs it.

JeepNamedTJ I noticed something else. Is there somewhere you can purchase new grease boots for the passenger side sway bar? My lower one is torn. Can you buy a new screw in nipple for the grease gun hook up? Another point on a steering component is missing that.

SouthpawJ79 Ps. Yes jeeps r noisy.. But rattling or any sort of metal sound is never normal for a vehicle in my opinion...

SouthpawJ79 Get under it n check it out. Feel around for anything loose. That's how I found mine. Some mechanic initially told me mine was the catalytic convertor... But when I got under it I saw it was coming from a completely diff part of the exhaust... Thank god or else that's like over $200 n it still wouldn't hav been fixed

JeepCreeper I get a sound when I take off from a stop in my manual 2000 TJ that sounds like gravel banging around. It only does it in first gear from a stop, and not all the time. I don't know exactly what it is, but I'm guessing maybe it has something to do with the transmission? I've had some say that is just a common jeep noise. I don't really beleive that.

Northwest4x4 Did you throw a rod bearing? lol

:O

No power differance? How bad is this engine grinding noise???
10-27-2011 04:17 PM
SouthpawJ79 You sure it's not part of the exhaust? I've had a bracket that rusted off my exhaust tailpipe and it would rattle around 1700rpm with every gear... It sounded like it was coming from the engine when I drove.. Not behind me... Sounded like metal pipes/chains banging. Awwwwful sound... I got a lot of weird stares from ppl I drove by lol. So happy it's fixed... Never thought I'd think a jeep was quiet lol compared to that nasty noise

JeepNamedTJ I guess it may be but it sounds more like someone playing with change or a chain

Jerry Bransford Could that 'rattling' be the engine pinging?

Engine Grind/Rattle While Accelerating Help

My I6 seems to grind/rattle when I acceerate. I think it's the engine. It sounds kind of like change jingling and a grind mix. Any thoughts?
