thdrduck Nope. Mine is still dead nuts empty when it reads 1/2. Just ask my kid how he knows this. One night he got to tell his girlfriend he was out of gas and wasn't lying.

Dr_Strangelove There was a recall on my 97, before the recall was done, when the little yellow light came on, you better have a gas station in sight, lol.

After the recall, the light comes on with about 4 gallons left in the tank.

Like another poster above, mine seems to read more accurately when the tank is closer to empty.

TJWenatchee I find the Gas Gauge as a nice little conversation piece. When it works right, no conversation. When it doesn't work right, I talk to it and call it many things. I go by mileage on the trip Gauge.

You don't have to--the fuel level sending unit can be replaced independently of the fuel pump.

Dconnell Thunder duck,
Were you able to fix your gas gauge? I have the same problem after the dealership replaced the sending unit under a recall.

my gauge reads 1/4 to 1/2 full when it's actually empty

The claim it's not the sending unit, but a wiring problem or a problem with the gauge

Skyhawk32 Well that means no grounding problem. Anybody got an ideas?

thdrduck There is only one electrical connection to the pump unit so I assume it's the same ground. Since I changed my pump my gauge reads 1/2 when it's empty but I'm not dropping the tank again to try and find out why. Not that it's a really big job, but that stupid plastic nut that holds the pump in is a real pain in the a$$!.

Skyhawk32 Ya mine will come on at the gas station right after filling up. Just wondering if the pump and sending unit have the same ground. I think it's a grounding problem but I am not dropping the tank to find out it's a bad sending unit and have to change the pump too. If that's the case I'll just keep fueling up at 250 miles

robbiecc mine works but not all that accurate. it'll read 1 thing one second(and seems to stay there for a while) then i'll look at it again and it has dropped 1/8 to 1/4 a tank. i'll fill it and it'll stay full for a long time, then all of a sudden it's 3/4-seems like the lower it gets the more accurate it is and finally did find out my low fuel idiot light works-nice to know.

reddwrangler Mine works most of the time, every once in a while it will show empty when I start it, then I shut it off and restart and back to normal. I just live with it

Gas gauge

Anyone have a problem with their gas gauge? Mine works when it wants to and I am not replacing a fuel pump for this. I just get gas every 250 miles but I want a gauge that works. Is there a grounding with a TJ tank?
