haroldpo6 If i read your post right, you will have to bleed the rear brakes if the master ran dry.

Well, a 25 yr old Wrangler is going to be prone to have repairs and certain wear items replaced. Sounds like your master cylinder is bad, as long as you determined that there are no leaks in the system. Unfortunately, you'll probably have to spend another grand to get it where you want. A thousand gets eatin up pretty fast. I must have dumped about 2,500 in my 89 over the past 3yrs. but now it's solid and I feel comfortable going anywhere. Good luck with your 87. Compared to other vehicles, they're not that difficult to repair. However, a 2.5 FI is prone to additional problems, but I don't know what engine you have.

jk'n I'm in a similar situation with my YJ but I bought it to turn wrenches on it with my son. Turn wrenches we have. My son is learning a lot. Broke some bolts, rounded some heads on bolts. Each one a learning situation. And we spent some money. I am now confident that he can drive it when he gets his license next month without fear that he is going to be stranded by something that we should have serviced. A lot of the usual things that cause problems have been replaced and she seems solid now. It is still only about only ten percent of what my new JKU Rubicon cost me. I couldn't have afforded a new vehicle for him. That is the main reason I'm in this forum. And I've been having fun in the process. I haven't turned wrenches like this since I was in my 20s and I'm in my 50s now. I think enjoying what you do for your jeep is a state of mind. Your fun can turn sour on you if you are putting a lot of money into it. But then you have to remember what you bought and why you bought it. A jeep bought for transportation can get on your nerves as the funds become short but consider the alternative: a passenger car that, at the same age, will give you a similar ownership experience turning wrenches on it or paying someone else to do it but not as much fun as a jeep to drive. When you love jeeps like I do, the work that I do on it becomes part of the enjoyment. I'd call that a win win.

jk'n Well, with an 87, you will have to expect to do some wrench turning on it. Your problem sounds minor. I just completed pulling my transmission for the second time...first time for clutch replacement and the second time for transmission replacement. Good news was I bought the transmission off of Craigslist for $150.00. Now I have a working clutch and 5 solid gears. Tomorrow I ditch the tiny steering wheel in favor of one the same size as the original. Without power steering, a tiny wheel is counter productive.

Brake fluid is cheap. Bleeding requires a helper. All in all, an easy procedure. Master cylinder replacement is more expensive but still not a budget buster.

jk'n If no slaves are leaking, then the fluid could be slipping past the master cylinder. Did you bleed the lines?

brake pdl just went lifeless no leaking fluid rear res empty and filled it still lifeless not even a little bit spungy
