98handshaker SoCal dirtbiker, enjoying the softer Jeep saddle as my age progesses. Thanks for the tips.

98handshaker Thanks. D30 with 4.11, and I'll avoid the bent ones.

98handshaker Thanks. The new asmbly is my problem - Chrylser says part number 4864910AB Axle Asmbly for my '98 D30 with 4.11 is backordered indefinitely. Chrylser can't seem to answer if another year asmbly would work. I'm in SoCal and will look into used parts. Thanks again.

crafty Welcome to the site, what area are you in? You could also try and search by distance. You pull it yards will not be included on that site.

jeeperman You should be able to find a junkyard D30 and just bolt it in. There are 2 things you need to watch out for:

Bent housing
Gear ratio.

Other than that, it is pretty much a bolt in from 1997-2006, I believe. Should be lots laying around. I think that you can even use the D30 out of the front of XJ's, but they had some funny gear ratios that were never used in the TJ's, so you have to be careful with that.

Expensive lesson

I'll make this short story long. I let my son drive my 98 to school - college actually. One day he reports it was having trouble backing up, but he got out OK. He drives to his brother's place, and when he leaves, it won't move. He calls a tow truck, and he says it made horrible noises while dragging up the flatbed. So, I find out from the shop that the front housing is broken. Many thousands of dollars, except the dealer can't get the one the catalog says to order. Some issue with a mopar supplier. So my jeep sits. I could gut the housing and go 4x2, but I want it done right. I am looking for options, including whether or not another model year housing will work. Help?
