|pairomedicsfish||OK guys, gonna pull this thing apart today. The fill is on the passenger side up high? Is it a tube that runs up? or is it a plug on the side of the tranny? Could this leak be from the T case? And the noise as well? It does not change at all when in 4wd low or high?????|

|richp||Make sure to pull the FILL plug before you pull the drain plug, that holds true on both the tranny and the transfer case. Just experience talking here. If you think about it the lightbulb will go off|

|pairomedicsfish||All gears, sounds like gravel. Leaking oil from somewhere.....I will pull the skidplate on X mas eve and look at the tranny proper. Might be the gasket....I hope. So the fill plug is where? high up, on the pass. side? Is it accesable from under or over?????|

All Gears? One Gear?
Fill plug is high on the passenger side, 15/16 socket to get it out. Use a pump ($4-$8 at the parts store) to get oil up in there. Redline MT-90 is top choice.
Drain plug is the one on the bottom, also 15/16.
I'll bet it's 5th gear.......... My AX5 did same thing, and in my research found it's chronic.
Unless you have a friend in a tranny shop.......find a New or Used AX5 and swap it out.......cuz the parts and labor to fix it will cost more.

|pairomedicsfish||Ahhh...I forgot to mention. it is a new noise, about a month old. I have made several long trips with it. One to W NC about 600 mile round trip and several to SE Florida from Orlando area...about 300 miles round trip.|

|Jerry Bransford||How long have you had your '98? Is this noise something that is new or since you've owned it?|

Ok, on my '98 TJ 4cyl manual transmission, I have noticed a noise that sounds like someone filled my tranny case with a handfull of pebbles
I got under it today and found a leak of fluid that looks like tranny fluid and is in the right place. what would be the most common cause of this leak? I am guessing the noise is certainly related.....Possible fixes for this? Depending on leak location?? How can I add fluid to keep it topped off until I fix the leak??and what kind of fluid should I use??
This is a daily street driver, with very little wheeling. Transmission shifts and runs fine....so far....Any help?
