Although we are having a warmer than average winter in the mountains of maine, I have driven my lifted JKU rubi with 285 75 17 in the snow a few times. In deep snow and slush it performed like a champ. I was cruising around my property in 10 inches of snow like it was nothing. Most SUVs could not do that. With an inch or less of packed snow on the road, it liked to slide. The electronic skid contol came in handy.
If I can swing it, I will be getting studded narrower snow tires on my stock rims. Snow tires work better in snow, mud tires dont do well on ice and hardpack. In maine, I'll be driving on ice all winter. The wind blows the snow off the snowbanks, the sun melts the snow on the pavement, by 3 pm it freezes again and the roads are slick.

|KSCRUDE||I have tried running seasonal tires over the years and it is a waste of time and money. I have about 14 4x4 vehicles running now and we run nothing but goodyear tires year around and we don't change for seasons. We just run Goodyear silent armor tires on most and duratras on some of the others and we never have a problem. And on all the semis and trailers we run nothing but goodyears on everything and never have any problems in all kinds of weather. Probably about 35 vehicles over all and they all run on goodyears. We run in extreme off road conditions with the semis, so bad that I trade off not only tires but wheels every year. Again nothing but Goodyear tires and alcoa wheels, all from the local Goodyear dealer. Kansas has the largest temp swings of any state in the nation. We get almost as hot as the hottest and almost as cold as the coldest. The silent armor tire is about the best all around tire that Goodyear makes, and it has the same snow and ice rating which is a 10, the best as the duratrac, just not as good off road as the duratrac in mud. Both are great winter tires so no need to swap as it is a pain in the A on a lot of vehicles. Run um down and switch um out. Goodyears rock and other tires rot. No there is a lot of good year round tires out there. Just find one that works for you and run it. No need to change for WINTER, as it's not really that big of a deal. Slap on some duratracs and rock Em. Year round, it's all you need.|

|jsmith2038||I just setup my 2012 with a set of these Continental Extreme Winter 235/85/r16. Got a set of factory steel JK wheels of craigs list cheap. Tall and thin, they seem to ride great so far. My research said that 15 were a bad idea and to go with 16, because of brake clearance|

If you want 33's or 35's for snow and ice, check out the Yokohama Geolandar I-T G072.
While you have to go with a 16" rim vs a 15", you can get the LT315/75R16 if you want 35's, or the LT285/75R16 if you prefer 33's.
The reviews on 1010 Tire's seem decent enough. Discount Tire can order that size for you.

|SylvanSahara||if the style matters to you at all you can usaully pick up a set of stock wheels for $300-400|
|11-27-2011 09:35 PM|
|11-27-2011 08:53 PM|
|SylvanSahara||you could also probably find a set of take-offs(maybe even a full set of 5) on this site or craigslist for cheap to put those snows on, they will pay for themselves in like three yrs(of on/off twice a year)|

|the-pred||Do u consider 245 thin|
|11-27-2011 06:48 PM|
|wigman||Narrower tires are better in the snow. I spent too much on mods this year to get snows. Next year I'm putting snows on my stock wheels. I found a 245 80 R 17 out there somewhere the last time I looked.|

|the-pred||Ya but I like the look of a taller tire. Thats why I was looking for the tire sizes for 15" and 16"|

|the-pred||You running 15"?|
|11-27-2011 05:19 PM|
|KSCRUDE||I am running the same tire and wheel on my 11 sahara and they did great last winter in the snow and ice. I will run them again this winter with 13K on them. Have you tried them out yet. Save your money or thow on some duratracs or silent armor goodyears, both excellent winter tires!|

|the-pred||So everyone has convinced me that I should go with a thinner tire for winter. I would like my tire size if I wanted to go with a thin 15 inch tire. Also what am I asking for when I ask for a steel wheel. What is the bolt pattern and all the other specs I need. Thanks for the help.|

you can climb a snow or ice covered tree w/ these
Nokian Hakkapeliitta LT
not sure what the sizes available are or if i put the right model but far and away snows i have ever owned

|SylvanSahara||ditto on the more narrow tire being better for grip in the ice and snow. If you can get a Nokian Hakkapeliitta best snow tires money can buy...and price that way, but if you are good about putting them on/off at proper temps they will easily last 5-6 yrs|

You can play with different sizes here

|11-26-2011 12:16 PM|
I have ordered a 2012 wrangler and here in Europe we have bigger brake calliper so the smallast rim size is 17"
I wanted a aggresive pathern that was approved as a Wintertire in sweden, and I found the Cooper Max S/T and I went with studs
CooperTiresConsumer - Discoverer S/T MAXX
They come in 33.1" LT285/75R16

|the-pred||Anyone have a picture of a taller thin tire on a 15" black rim?|
|11-26-2011 10:29 AM|
|jkjeeper06||I'm trying to find a bigger than stock winter tire for you and they are hard to come by. The Firestone winter force comes in a 285/75/r16 but that is one of the biggest snow tires I've found|
