As stated above you shouldn't have a problem fitting the 31" with the third brake light in the factory location. The problem you'll run into is with the added weight of the larger spare on the tailgate. Over time you'll stress and fatigue the steel and it'll start to crack. The added weight will also beat up the factory tailgate hinges. This is why most people will go with a bumper that has a swing away tire carrier.

I just installed the Barricade bumper on a TJ and we also have it on our JK's here at ExtremeTerrain. The bumpers are really stout. They're built out of 3/16" steel and the finish is top quality. They have a grease fitting on the hinge and the bolt right up to the Jeep with no drilling necessary. I ran out to the warehouse to snap a picture for you, let me know what you think.

This would be recommendation. There are a ton of other great options out there and you really can't wrong. Let me know if you have any questions at all. I'd be glad to help you out.

JCS05Rubi My rubi had 31s on it, it cleared fine. 31-32 is deffinatly the tallest I would go on that carrier though. It just didnt feel happy to me. I took the spare/carrier/3rd brake light off, and my tailgate is MUCH happier. I had a honda hit my back bumper/rear tire at about 10 in stop and go traffic, and it buckled my tailgate. I backed into a pole in my 97 sport, with stock 30in tires, at about 25 being a young moron, and had no problems. Maybe it was just coincidence, but I think 31-32 is stressing that tailgate near its max. It will hold, but I would get a rear swing out whenever the bank allows..

skeez2v I have a 33" on mine and have been it running close to a year now with no problems. You got to make some spacers to push the spare tire bumpers out a little to keep the the tire from rattling around (from what I was told the rattling around can really do a number on your tailgate and spare tire carrier if you don't make adjustments for a tight fit). Also with that much weight on the tailgate/tirecarrier I never leave the tailgate open and hanging, it will bend the hell out of your hinges. You should be okay as long as you make all the necessary adjustments. Just my 2cts.

Chad P Mine had a 31 on it when I bought it. I now have a 33 on there but I took of the black stops that are bolted to the tail gate and I took off the brake light. plus I have a used 33 bfg on and its close.

kg4kpg I ran a 33 spare on the previous jeep for 3 years with no problems at all.

I'll disagree with that. It's certainly not strong enough for 33" tires, even then it takes a little while to fail, but it holds up to 31" and 32" tires without problem.

orange05tj Heres mine. 32X11.50 on soft 8, stock carrier. Have plenty of room.

Unlimited Tiny runs 31's on the stock carrier. I don't think she did any thing other than bolt it on...

Jerry Bransford It even fit when I was still running 32" tires, it was right at the tread but it was not blocked by the tire. A 32" tire is only 1" taller at that point than the factory 30" so it's not a big deal. It'll fit for sure with 31" or even 32", no issues. I didn't need to add a spacer until I got to 33" tires... which the spare tire bracket and 3rd brake light didn't last long after that since the factory spare tire bracket cracked under the weight of the 33" spare tire.

crump582 I am putting the 31s on 15x8 Cragar rims. I hope it fits, but if not I might get that spacer from you if you don't need it.

orange05tj If your using a stock rim, it will hit. I have an spacer for it if you need. I have 32's with the spare on stock carrier but on a 4 bs rim. I just put my 3rd brake light back on for inspection today. When I get back, its coming back off cuz its ugly.

02Prove I have 31s and it fit pretty ok. Can't go any bigger though.
01-04-2008 07:02 AM
jeeperman You should be alright, the Rubicons came with 31" tires on the tailgate, and the third brakelight was visible. I would try it and see!
