jk'n When I replaced the transmission on mine, the guy who sold me the transmission from his 2000 TJ included a barely used clutch (I now have two barely used clutches as spares) it looked a bit cheezy compared to the one from NAPA. I spun the throwout bearing on the one he gave me and the NAPA one spun very quietly and precisely while the one that came with the transmission sounded bad and felt bad. My guess is that you get what you pay for. I have heard the same thing about transmission rebuild kits. The price for those is all over the ball park too. I'm hearing that quality is a factor. It is hard to go wrong with a company like NAPA.

I got a starter from Advanced Auto Parts for $70.00. The Chrysler part (new) would probably have been more than double that price maybe even three times the price. With a part like a starter, you just bolt up the new one and your are done. With a clutch it is not a simple bolt up repair it is more like a project. So if you are going to spend the time on that it is worth putting quality parts in.

Tralph13 Why do the prices for the clutch kits vary in price so much? $195 to $347 with everything included

jk'n Believe it or not, the previous owner (my neighbor) included it in the sale because he thought there was something wrong with the clutch but I think he paid just over $400.00 for it. If I ever have to do another clutch replacement I will get the same kit. I've been driving standards now for over 30 years and the clutch in the YJ responds very nicely for the price of the kit.

BTW, don't overlook getting the flywheel re-surfaced. A must when replacing the clutch.

Tralph13 How much did that cost you?

jk'n If the transmission is stock, it is easy. They just look it up. I got a NAPA kit that included pressure plate, clutch plate, pilot bearing, and slave cylinder/throwout bearing. I have been very pleased with it. Works great.

Tralph13 Had my mechanic check it out and I need a clutch kit. Looking for one online. What is Aisin Transmission? How do I know what kit to buy?

jk'n If you have a leak in the hydraulic clutch link and have gotten air into the system, it will get harder and harder to get it into gear. Bleeding it will temporarily solve the problem but if it is leaking, the problem will return.

stykthyn Change the fluid in your transmission and then check the fluid level in your master/slave cylinders.

Tralph13 Its not slipping. Running around town it felt weird, like a grinding when I released it. Then it was hard going into 2nd and it was having difficulty in reverse.

stykthyn What's it doing exactly? If its slipping you will need new clutch, pressure plate and throw out bearing.

clutch issues

Ok, thanks for helping me out with the death wobble on my YJ. Now I have another issue. What should be the first thing I check if I think my cluth is going?
