Thanx fella. I have owned a lot of Jeeps, but this is the foirst time I have had one with the Crank Sensor going out. I have heard people say they give a lot of trouble.
It runs much better now

DirtyRob I do believe it is fixed after changing the CPS
I am going to drive it again to the store now and I hope it is fixed. So far so good

DirtyRob I changed the crank position sensor tonight. I haven't driven it much yet, but no sputter/pop so far

The old one was very dirty. I am wondering if just a cleaning would have helped?

I haven't been able to drive it much this past week, but as far as I can tell it is not predictable at all.
What I have found is earlier today that when it sputters, I can lift the hood and mess with the CPS plug on the passenger fire wall, and then it will go back to running ok. There seems to be no damage to the plug, and it is not corroded. This may be a fluke, I will have to drive it some more to be sure

strykerman There is a fuel pressure regulator on. 1990 2.5 TBIs its located on the back side closest to the valve cover below the fuel return line. Looks like a little canister hanging upside down

guardian262 D5....The CPS can definitely be a culprit and loves to be an intermittent problem. Do you notice it acting up more when it is wet or humid out? Could be a good sign of some exposed wiring. I have had that problem in the past but it was on a newer OBD II vehicle.

DirtyRob I am hearing that I may need to get a computer. This is kinda frustrating.........I know that usually a sputter/pop is usually a fuel delivery problem, but can't the crank position sensor do this as well? A computer can to I am told.
Now I can't get it to do it

Compression is great, the motor has about 5,000 miles on it since a re-build. I am thinking either trash in the tank or fuel pump.
Is there a fuel pressure regulator on my 90 with a throttle body? I was thinking the injector regulated the pressure

guardian262 Very well could be the mystery floater. If you come up empty on that, might want to try a compression check on all cylinders just to make sure you aren't getting blow-by when under a heavy load.

DirtyRob I changed the fuel filter 2 weeks ago, and a full tune-up 4 weeks ago.
The crazy thing is that I went out and ran it through the woods tonight, and it is running great. I climbed tree stumps, hills and everything I could to get it to miss and sputter, and it ran fine. I plan to drop the tank and see if I have a ghost in there floating around

Beastmaster Has the tank ever been down? In 21 years allot of gunk can build up back there but is easy to clean out once it is opened up. You can even replace the screen in the tank for not too much. It definately sounds like a fuel problem to me, I'd start in the back and work my way forward. The cheapest thing would be to start with your fuel filter, I replace mine annualy.

I have a 90 2.5 YJ with manual tranny. I went wheeling Sat at Uwharrie, and I was getting aa slight miss every now and then and just ignored it thinking maybe some bad fuel.
Well as I went on wheeling it got worse, and eventually it would do it on every incline, and when it was under any kind of load. It even died a few times. It will idle fine for as long as I will let it, but under a load it starts the sputter/pop.
I am torn between pulling the tank, and replacing the crank position sensor.
