|aktive1||i have only had 1 jeep automatic, and i was scared to death of it after hearing that they were hard to find if it broke and the rebuild cost was usually the same price as a used jeep. my prefrence is the 5 spd, the ax5 has its issues but they are alot easier to find. hope this helps..|

Great information, I'm also new to jeeps and the forum I'm looking at 2 jeeps- 4 cylinders, one is auto the other is 5 speed, both 95.
Any disadvantages of the auto over the 5 speed?
The auto has lower mileage and better condition compared of the 5 speed.
I'm planning of using it for the snow , daily driving and on occasion towing.
your help and input i appreciated.

|aktive1||i have had both the 2.5 and 6cylinder, i did not notice a difference on the hwy but i did notice a difference towing my jet skis with the 6cyl. it had more torque and was easier to pull out of the launch area. the top speed was only about 75mph. i learend that if you draft behind another vehicle it really helps the hwy speed.|

|Kynaston1474||I've only had my Jeep for a few months. But let me say a couple of weeks with me is worse than a few years with most people. I had it offroad day before yesterday and managed to get it good and stuck. I had to drop into 4wd low and rock it for a minute get out. Almost went off the side of a mtn. In my opinion the low gearing makes the 2.5 desireable offroad as long as your getting traction that is...|

|duaneduanet||I can go anywhere in my 2.5L that my friend can in his 4.2L. If you want to drive on HWY get the 6cyl. If you want a good off road or around town Jeep get the 4 cyl.|

|hellboy67||I like the coil lift alot. I built a 95 with all chevy parts. 1 ton axles. 350 350. God I miss it. But the pro comp is a nice ride. Even better off road. A bit sketchy at times when windy but I keeps ya honest on the road. Lol|

|hellboy67||I have an 89 yj. 2.5. Ax 5. 5" pro comp explorer coil conversion lift. Locked front with warn lockouts. Locked rear with 4:88s. Electric fan. Running 33s for winter. She will run 80 on a calm day. When its windy not so much! Gas mileage? Who cares! I can run the road or hit the hills! I can follow quads offroad and watch fullsize trucks wish they could follow! Wranglers are for fun.|

Please let me add.
It's not the AMC 2.5 that's the problem. AMC built far superior engines, mostly tough and bulletproof, than Chrysler could dream of building---better than Ford and Chevy imho. I've owned AMC jeeps. Much better.
It's the lame Asin AX-5 tranny that Chrysler put into these YJ's.
I've had to replace one at 75,000 miles a few months ago.
Love my YJ and the AMC/AX combination has gotten me out of some tight, off road situations. But just barely at full power.
If you just want a reliable daily driver, buy it.
If you want to go see some gorgeous remote back-country...it's an adventure..

|jk'n||With the age of a YJ, chances are that it has gone through a few muffler changes. They have lots of options for replacements. I would stick with stock for mine. The muffler on there now can't be stock.....it make too much noise for it to be stock. My 2008 which is stock is quiet. Since mine is a four cylinder, is should be quieter than a 6. It may look stock but I doubt it is if it makes a lot of noise.|

|River Rat||I drive my 95 a 100miles everyday for work 55-60mph. Put on a Airaid intake & TBS, was getting 22-24mpg. Just put on a set of Bfgs M/T 31 10.5s now down to 18mpg. Injectors & efan next.|

unless he took the cat off or added an aftermarket muffler the only other reason it would make more noise would be if there is a leak.
I can see wanting it loud if you had a v8 rumbling under the hood, and trust me theres not a lot sweeter than hearing a cammed v8 running through its gears, but on a jeep that will rarely see over 3k rpms? No thanks!
all in all it sounds like you really like the jeep. The items you have issue with are easy to fix. If you havent already pick it up. You wont regret it.

|jk'n||Ditto on the exhaust. Mine has a muffler that makes it pretty loud. I have already had this conversation with my son. If I were to replace the exhaust would he want it quieter. He said no. It must be a young person thing. If I were going to be driving it, one of the next things to get replaced would be the exhaust with a stock muffler and then.......aaaaaaaah........peace and quiet reigns again!|
