I filled my trans with mud/water multiple times and i had issues with it slipping/etc.
changed my trans filter/fluid at least 5 times in the last 6 months. you are correct on all of this. you also don't have to undo the skid if you don't want to.
it's actually much easier to do this way, in my opinion.
you can pretty much do this with a ratchet, a 15mm socket (i think?), and a size 15 torx bit. don't forget to clean off the magnet in the pan as well.
the fluid will drain into the skid plate if you don't remove it, and out the holes on the bottom of it. if you have a oil catch pan you can catch pretty much all of it, though.
i did this once in the mud out wheeling once. took me about an hour or so to do it all.

1) When I changed the fluid on a for taurus everything I found said 6 quarts would come out. I put in almost 9 to get it back to the full mark on the dipstick.
2) tighten the bolts like you would on a tire. do one snug, then the opposite one, then one about a quarter of the way around and its opposite one. once they are all snug take a torque wrench and go all the way around adjusting them to the proper speck. It was 6-8ft-lbs for the car I was working on.

Auto trans fluid/filter change write up/tips?
Ive been searching for a good write up but havent found one yet, anyone know of one?
Its my understanding that you remove the skid plate, crack open the tranny pan and let the fluid drain, open all the way, clean pan, change filter, change gasket, replace pan, replace skid plate, and fill tranny back up with oil. dropping the pan will only drain about 4 quarts of oil so be sure not to overfill.
Anything Im missing? I plan on doing that this weekend.
Are there any torque specs on these bolts or am I just being rediculous?
RTV vs Rubber Gasket?
