88muddog Reminds me of a 1988 yj I nearly bought. Turned out to be a bad rod. I would of purchased the jeep but he wanted to try and recover all of the cost for the repair on top of what he was asking for the jeep.Found a real nice 95 4.0 for less money. There are nice yj's out there and sometimes you got to kiss a lot of toads to find a Princes.

vanman1980 I'm no mechanic, so I'm not even going to try to pinpoint what that noise was, but haggle the price. Let the owner know about it and drop the price to a level where you would feel comfortable shelling out a couple hundred $$$ in case it were a problem later.

Ppl aren't exactly buying vehicles this time of year, so use that to your advantage.

tomjohn777 I would check transfer case level, also check around rear seal were the drive shaft comes out for fluid

Nubby55 I would check the Bolts that hold the torque converter to the flex plate {flywheel}.

Timberwolf if the auto trans shifts smoothly into all gears and fluid is ok, it should be good
does it shift into 4wd and 4lo easily?
could be bad motor or trans mount
or cat converter broken up inside

brent in az No fluid in trans

or

no fluid in transfer case.

I know that exact sound you describe from experience...probably trans.

I won't say it means long term damage. 89 still has the bulletproof AMC I6 with the AX-5/Ax-15 tranny bolted to it.

Worst case scenario, it's a common trans and might cost you 500-600 to replace it used down the road, if, there is, in fact major damage from loss of fluid. That's an if.

Just curious what buyer is asking? I'm guessing 5K.

Buying Jeep Question

I have been looking into buying a jeep for my son for awhile. I just recently went to take a look at a 1989 jeep Wrangler automatic inline 6 with around 100,000 miles on it. I was very pleased with the overall appearance and about to purchase it, but after I had driving it for a while I heard a knocking coming from what sounded like it was coming more from the transmission/transfer case and I know that it definitely not a lifter or values. I got under the it and still could not determine where it was coming from. Almost sounded like something rattling around in he trans or tranfer case. Does anyone have any idea what it could be and should it be a deal breaker.
