I only have a couple with the case off.
Yes my third gear is destroyed.. furthest to the right on mainshaft
Main Shaft taken out
You will need some sort of a press like this to get the gears and synchro's off the main shaft I bought this one at harbor freight for around 80$.

What have you noticed that is cheap and fits in the word Jeep ? From what I have noticed they are comprised of a congrameration of parts from various brands. Everything I have touched has its own touch of oddity and makes no sense. If I had known this in advance I would have changed everything in the drive train and wiring to GM. Much of their hardware is standard and is available in any salvage yard. When I ask for jeep parts most think it is foreign, and to a point I have to agree.
The good part is I learn quickly from my mistakes and this will be number last with this particular four letter word.
When you get into this AX 5 and replace what needs replacing I guarantee your budget will lift off like a saturn rocket. Then again it depends on your intrepetation of cheap fix.

I had only planned on replacing the synchros and inspecting/replacing any other parts while I was in there. Everything seems to operate just fine. I only grind going into 4th gear about once a week when I'm not paying attention. I'm certain I've worn something down before I figured out all the sweet spots so I didn't grind.
If it's any more than that, I may just have to replace it...kind of hoping to get away cheap, but all the posts/info I've read got me sweating now.

If your AX 5 has the same problem mine had ( front bearing wore slightly moving the shaft away from the gear contact and chipping 5th gear ) you may want to check the parts prices first. For the two parts I need and a gasket kit it is over $550. ( unless you can get one heck of a discount ) Pull the front cover and check. The gears are approximately 3/8 inch thick and certainly will not stand up in a 3000 pound plus vehicle. Who ever engineered this mess was looking for the parts department to save the company.
In short when I weighed the options it is not worth rebuilding. Good luck on your venture.

AX-5 Rebuild Photos
Hello, all. I'm prepping for an AX-5 rebuild and was hoping that somebody had photos of their own rebuild. I've never seen the inside of an AX-5. At one time, there was a link posted here to a fellas rebuild project (TransOverhaul.pdf), but it doesn't work anymore. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
