I guess I never went back and updated the thread.
I sold off the rest of the CJ5 (frame was all that was left) when we moved from central Texas to the Houston area back in 2008.
I have been back in a TJ for a few years now. You can see my build thread here:
I do regret selling off the CJ5. Back then, our son was an infant, we had limited 'toy' money, I had the CJ and I had a TJ. It just didn't make sense to keep the CJ between lack of time and money.
I am happy to say that the time and money obstacles are MUCH better situations, and eventhough I have a TJ as my "toy", I would love to have the CJ to build up.

|flattietj||understood, man i love cjs, i just never had good luck with em.... i wouldlike to have a decent 304 powered 5 but they are hard to find, a buddy of mine just scrapped his b/c he had no where to store it...that lil hunk of metal went everywhere the big boys do....just with a lil more force|

haha...you'll hate it even more after it's blasted and primered. if i wasn't going to Vegas this weekend, there is a good chance i would be out working on it.
didn't you do the same thing with yours?....strip it down, blast, and rebuild?

well, nothing really exciting, but i pulled the frame out to the driveway to have a go at it with the pressure washer. i was mainly after getting the caked on dirt off of it, but some paint came off in the process. it's original factory paint, so i'm not too surprised, but it did come off with ease, and i have a cheap pressure washer.
i'd say a good 20lbs of dirt came off of this thing.
before i moved it back in the garage, i shot it with some spray paint to cover the newly exposed steel.
really i was just teasin myself. i am getting a media blaster for father's day, so when i get that, i will get this thing done for real. at that point, i will coat it in primer for the time being. there will be some welding done on this frame for suspension and stuff, so i'm not going to put the final coating on until that is complete.
i still have a lot of stuff to pull off of it though. i started removing the rear hitch thing, but my son was inside sleeping and i was making too much noise. as soon as i make my way to the hardware store, i will pick up some more cut off wheels for the grinder and get that front bumper off. i need to remove the steering box, gas tank skid, rear hitch and bumper, the rest of the fuel and brake lines, and i think that's about it for now.
i will be removing all of the factory suspension mounts, but i will wait to do that when the new stuff is going into place...just in case i need a reference point.

there is a lot of surface rust and plenty of dirt, but all in all, i think it is one solid 30 year old tub. there are some odd holes here and there where stuff was bolted down that i will get filled.
i will be taking the frame out to the driveway to pressure wash, then sand and slap a coat of primer on to keep it protected.
the frame will be my first step of the project. i want to get it worked out before i start on the tub. i want to get everything lined up and welded on, then get the suspension under there. then i'll work on the axles to get it rolling, then work on the drivetrain, then finally start on the body. it's going to be SUPER slow so don't expect a project log like the A team builders have going.
at least the frame doesn't have any problem areas. it just needs to be cleaned up and needs some stuff welded on.
touching up on some previous ideas/plans...i will be doing the BTF front full width kit which is a weld on bumper/crossmember with integrated full width spring mounts. in the rear, i will be running the BTF CJ2XJ stretch kit. it's good for about 5" of rear stretch. we all know the 5 can use as much extra wheelbase as it can get. i talked to BTF about the comp corners and rockers and they don't make them. the ones i pictured above were a one-off set one of the guys made and would've made more of, but he doesn't work there anymore so they don't have the design/pattern/etc and will not be making any. so the second option is a set of PSC modified crusher corners comp cut, and a set of PSC rocker knockers. thinking i will probably just go ahead with d60s f/r just so i don't regret it later. wanting to keep it as low as possible, and am now thinking with the d60s idea, that i'll want 38s, so perhaps stock YJ leaves SOA up front and stock XJ leaves SOA in back...and will adjust as needed. will likely run the BTF DIY front fenders. cage tied into frame and seat mounts, which will need to be moved back a good amount to fit my large self. fuel cell behind front seats. for the engine, pretty solid on running a built 4.3L Vortec V6 and a 4l60e auto tranny. would like to run an atlas II. i'm sure i'll get some flack for the 4.3L over a V8, but i like it.

here you can see some holes in the passenger side floorboard. i don't think it's bad enough to need to replace the whole panel. we'll see when it gets media blasted.
as it sits currently...don't hate me for doing that, i was just trying to make room. it will be one of the last things i work on, so it's going to be there for a while.

thought i would resurrect this thread for myself....
it's been a few months and a lot has changed..back and forth. pretty sure i know what i want to do now.
a while back, i decided to scrap the whole CJ5 project all together, sell what was left (body and frame), and put all of my attention and money to my TJ. i believe it has a cracked block, so it was going under the knife to begin a V8 swap.
well, things have changed once again. for non jeep related reasons, i have decided to sell my TJ..currently working a deal. i haven't had any decent offers on the frame and tub so i have just decided to keep it them and do the CJ5 build afterall. i went through a pretty 'wishy-washy' phase there for a while, but i think i have myself under control. it's harder having two project jeeps at once than i thought it would be.
so that's where i am today....going to continue on with the CJ 5 build and forget about TJs for a while.
rewind a couple months...while i was in the CJ selling mode, i sold the front fenders, grille, hood, and windshield for way too much money. even with deciding to go forward with the CJ build, i don't regret selling that stuff at the price i did. i will be going with a tube/flat fender so those were going anyway and when the time comes that i will need them again, i can find a grille, hood, and windshield easy enough around here. after starting with a 99% complete CJ5, i have sold everything down to just the main tub, frame, and gas tank, and have made over $2000 selling those parts.
below are some pics to get this thread up to date with pictures...it's just the frame and tub left. i still have the steel gas tank that i am offering for FREE if anyone wants to come get it. can't seem to get rid of it. it's in perfect condition, i just don't need it for my build (fuel cell).
with the front clip out of the way, it has been easier to go over the tub and really isolate the problem areas. there are of course more than i originally thought, but nothing really more involved than i thought, and still not too bad i don't think.
some close-ups of the areas...
driver's rocker - the whole thing needs to be cut out and replaced. it's pretty narly.
passenger's rocker - slight dent toward the rear, but it doesn't appear to be rot. there is a rot hole at the forward area of the rocker. i think this piece can be repaired. i will be running rocker guards in the end, so i'm not too concerned with perfection with the dent, but the rust has to go.
the other problem areas are on the underside, which i had not seen until i flipped it over (obviously)
driver's and passenger side...same problem. the metal has cracked. when the time comes to repair, i will ask detailed questions, but for now my thoughts are that those areas can just be patched and called 'good'.

haha...yeah, i definitely think we're luck in the rust respect.
like i mentioned in the CL listing, the lower cowl/rocker area will need to be replaced or patched, but they sell the exact panel on quadratec.
that whole panel won't need to be replaced, but at least it's available.
