I bought my 2012 JKU Sport in October. There were still plenty of 2011's left, but as mentioned, the deals weren't that good for them. Plus, they were offering better financing on the 2012.
Bottom line: get whatever you can afford. Sure, I'd love to have a Rubicon, but the Sport I ended up with was already exceeding my intended budget. If you don't plan to do much off roading, the Sport or Sahara should be your top picks.

I just got my JKU after having the dealer search for over a month and I still had to settle, so I should have actually ordered it, but I had an old trade that they were willing to give me over kbb and I wasn't sure it would last until delivery date. As another indicator I was able to get employee pricing and it only knocks about $3k off the sticker. Buy now, enjoy now and you might be able to get some wiggle on the price so they can meet their year end numbers.

|saucemc||Sorry for the confusion. To clarify, the resale value I am concerned with is NOT what I can sell it for later. Rather, how much will the jeep depreciate in the first year of ownership and affect what the dealer can resell it to me for? It seems like most new or slightly used 11's aren't really selling for much less than a similarly equipped new 12. Is this a misperception, or possibly an aberration? Or do they really hold their value that well out the gate?|

^^^^ This. Can't be put any simpler.
Unless you plan on doing fairly significant wheeling – which you've already said you probably won't do – you don't need the Rubicon. And, regardless of the model, all Jeeps wheel well completely stock.

The rubi will hold it's value better, but with an S, as Rick indicated, you'll be able to build your Jeep the way you want it. Pretty much a trade off, IMO.
If resale value is of paramount importance to you, buy the Rubicon. However, you also stated that purchase price was a concern. So buy the S.
Hmm. You don't wanna share your cake, do you?
Let me put it this way...if you want a Jeep that you can build to your specifications, to do what YOU wanna do with it, and can live with a lesser resale value, buy the S.

I am glad I did not wait. Supplier discount, like tread lightly gave me a good deal. Sport does everything I need it to do....|

First, I'm glad this has become a very active thread, lots of great thoughts and perspectives!
Second, it seems natural to assume the majority of Jeep owners who are likely to utilize a Wrangler forum are those interested in modifications, and therefore also in off-roading. Reasonable demographic observation that explains the heavy Rubi favoritism. Not a bad thing.
Third, I definitely think the comments about appeal of off roading once tried are legitimate, I just need to try a bit and see if it's my cup o tea.
Lastly, for those who have traded in relatively new jku or bought slightly used, can you get a much better deal than what 1% off plus haggling gets me??

|New2012JEEP||Seems to be a lot of Rubicon snobbery going on, even after someone says no serious off roading will be done! I got the sport and love it, has u connect, tow, pentastar, etc... I didn't really consider the others cause way too expensive, any 2012 Jeep is a beast, a very capable beast.|

Sadly, the USAA car buying service does not offer the 2012 JKU Rubicon which is what I want
Hpwever, you can get a smokin' deal on a 2012 Rubicon 2dr well equiped!

|JPi1||I don't think you can compare a Sahara to a rubi, totally different vehicles. We just ran a trail in johnson valley called "Bullfrog" where there were two saharas in the mix of several rubis. Halfway through the trail, the saharas bailed out, ripped off or gouged fenders, damage to the running boards, or whatever those steps are called, undercarriage damage, and disappointed and pissed off owners. They failed miserably! The group had to wait for them to get thru sections several times. I'm on my 6th jeep and second rubi, and no regrets at all. And I do drive mine daily, and take it on vacations hundreds of miles away. Buy the rubi and don't look back.|

I ended up spending 1.7K on a budget boost and 33x12.5s on MB72s bringing me up to about 29K total: still 4.5K less than the Rubi. Do I wish I had a Rubi? Yes. Am I happy with my decision? Yes. Will I feel the same two years from now? I'm not sure, but I should be ready to trade it on on a diesel by then

Back to your Q, I've met 1 that regrets getting the Sport but it was the only Jeep within his Budget, none that don't use the Rubi's capabilities, and the Sahara is a GREAT all-around Jeep and we have no regrets what-so-ever.

How often do you run into people who buy sport and regret it later? What about the opposite, bought rubi and ended up not really using those capabilities?

The first one is an over-all pic of the Jeep, the second is of a scratch we got from The Body Shop in Rio Puerco on the FL Fender, third is a scratch from the same source on the BL Fender and a little scratch on the siderail.

Sahara seems to only improve comfort features that I don't need, and rubi seems like too much since I've never done remotely serious off reading, nor know if I'll have the time. But I absolutely appreciate the thoughts! I'm in Cincinnati, Ohio now, moving summer 2012.
I get a 1% off invoice through work (which is awesome). I don't NEED the jeep now (have a paid off 04 Corolla) so that's why I'm going back and forth on when to jump. Wouldn't mind saving a thousand or two buying new 12 when the 13's are coming out.

|Bappy56||Now, but get the Rubicon or Sahara because it will do things that will blow your mind. Jeeps are versitle little suckers but they are tough old birds. To find trails in your area (if you decide to go 4wheeling) goto the California forum. Jeeping is a blast and you might enjoy it, the jeep community is lage and still growing. Almost everyone is really nice and help with all your problems as well as not force you past your comfort levels. But I'm just trying to help you with choosing what to do, as well as trying to get you to help our little "sport-hobby" community grow. Whatever you do though, if you see another jeep pass you remeber to wave at them, if they don't wave back, they're either jerks, or didn't see you.|

2012 JKU now or wait?? (if I can!)
I have been following this forum for some time, preparing for purchasing my first ever Jeep!
Here is my dillema: I won't go into all the reasons, but I'm looking to buy a JKU Sport, won't really be off roading it (but will be living in San Diego so need that top off!!). No plans to rock crawl, but occasional backpacking, snowboarding, etc. trips. I'm settled on the 2012 (new engine, better gas mileage, towing jet skis). What I'm concerned with is purchase price and resale value.
Based on your experience with past model years, how much could I save by waiting to purchase my 2012 jku new next summer/fall before the 2013's or same time but slightly used? If it's not substantially different, I'll stop the anguish and go find a dealer now. I plan on owning my first jeep for a LOOOONG time.
