I don't really trust centering an axle by using the body as a reference. I try to measure against the frame. It's easy on the back, you make sure the distance from the upper spring perch to the tire is the same on both sides.

As I said centering the front is a PITA. The way I do it, which is also a PITA is to measure from the back plate on the brake to the frame on the opposite side and get both of those measurements the same.

Pulling on the frame could be distorting the springs which can throw things off. If the front track bar is disconnected turning the steering wheel slightly in the opposite direction you want the axle to shift works pretty well and doesn't throw things off. It usually takes a couple of tries to get it centered and driving between tries helps since the springs need to resettle after shifting the axle.

Oldguy Thought of one more possibility. Be sure that the jeep is on a perfectly level surface when you do it. Otherwise the weight shift will throw off the alignment. It does not take much to get a weight shift in a coiler when the track bar is disconnected.

Oldguy You're not lifting the jeep up with a jack while you're working on the track bar by any chance? That would throw it off. You might try disconnecting the bar, bouncing both ends of the jeep up and down to settle the springs and then reconnecting it. It can be a PITA to get them centered correctly.

kRicketts96 Hows it going. I'm new to this site and to working on jeeps. I have a 2004 tj and it has a 2'' lift on it. I have DW's and so i got a adj. trakbar from Rustysoffroad. When i put it on i made sure that the axl was centered and tightened it up, and took it for a ride. When i got back it was 1/2'' off. So i tryed it again and still the same thing. Any ideas what could be going on?

amerijeep OK. Here's what I've done. In each tech forum, CJ, YJ, and CJ, there is now a sticky that links directly to the yuccaman site and his death wobble page. I emailed the gentleman and he was very gracious about letting us link to it.

When someone comes in and ask about death wobble, please feel free to refer them to the sticky so that they may see the information.

Keep in mind, Wrangler Forum is based on "we will answer all questions"! No one should ever be told to "look it up" or "do the research". The sticky is not to replace real conversation, but just act as a tool that can be refered to.

SurfnSnow you're lucky, the dealer here wouldn't even look at my jeep after I said death wobble. I had dw recently and it was the tie rod ends & tie rod that were the cause. I upgraded to the big daddy tie rod and used the original tre's. As soon as I did that I had a shimmy. Wheelin' one day I hear & feel a thunk in my steering wheel, checked and nothing looked out of place. on the road full on dw. took it to dealer, they looked and tightend everything and sent me on my way. took to 4wheel parts and they found that the original tre on passenger side had been "pushed" in (it fixed my alignment). now here's where it was probably my fault, as I installed the tie rod I did not have one of the jam nuts (driver's side) installed

amerijeep OK. I received and email from the site owner in response to my request. I will have update soon. I can't make this decision on my own. I have to check with the rest of the admin and moderator team.

I'm going to unstick this thread now due to I don't think we'll need a sticky here at all.

I'd say if you have only 400 miles on the tires then there's probably no need to rotate them. However I would suggest getting a good balance done on them. They might be perfectly balanced, but it's worth it to have them run'em again to be sure. You shouldn't have to pay anything for it if you just had tires put on.

When your mechanic is putting on the adj. trac bar have them tighten up everything else in the front end also. Not a bad idea if you have to drive that far on a regular basis.

Should I get the tires rotated and rebalanced also? There are about 400 miles on the tires so do I really need to rotate them? I just want to get this stuff done before I have to drive 200 miles to school in 2 weeks and i dont want death wobble while going 70.

mrbigjeep i think that there are cures for it...sometimes there are things that only mask the problem but i think it can be gotten rid of

amerijeep I don't know of any time out. Kyle might be the one to ask about that.

However you want to do it is cool though. I can fix it all when we have sufficient info for the sticky and clean out all of this then too.

Death Wobble.

Ok. We're creating a thread on death wobble to sticky. Anyone who want to post here and lists causes of death wobble, what to check for to resolve death wobble, etc., please post your input. I will take all replies to this thread and edit them into one single posting and credit each member that provided input in the final posting, which will be located right here.There will be a link from each jeep category to this posting.
