|brax||p.s. the cup is mounted on t he bottom of the gas tank, and it warps over time and hangs up on the float sender arm|

|brax||yj's have a pastic cup in the tank "by the float sender ball" which will either make the tank always read empty or always read half full, i took mine apart and removed the cup, prob fixed, however when your driving you have to pause for 10-20 secs for the gauge to go back to normal reading due to the gas sloshing around|

Back when I 1st got my jeep, I thought the gas guage broke on me.. then I realized it was cause I took the top off & got better mileage.....
Then I added bigger tires - less mileage
Then I lifted................ less mileage
Then I added even bigger tires............... even less mileage

the new gauge just may not be the right one.. it could be set up for the wrong ohm rating
as for the jumping gauge, I know some gas gauges have a resister to keep it from jumping around, like a delay type thing....
and mine is broke too

|Justin||i here ya...i have to run through my jeep sometime soon and fix all the little anoyances i have....the headlight switch makes a little "hum/buzz" noise when its on, my blower motor makes some noise when the heats on, my headlight switch is now starting to act up yesterday...damn little things..|

|Hubdeep||It might. It may have a very slight connection to the power so that when the wires touch, it'll read 1/4 full, when they disconnect-> empty. Also the intermittent signal could be playing havoc as well.|

I will look into that to try and get the original gauges to work again. But right now I have a relatively new set of gauges underneath the dash, the connection looks nice and clean no corrosion so I'm guessing its not that. Any idea why a new gauge wouldn't work if it isn't connection related? Im thinking the actual meter that reads the level in the tank itself may be the cause.

On the early YJ's Jeep used copper wire sandwiched between two heavy plastics sheets to send signals to the gauges. Often, (as jeeps do), water leaked into behind the gauges, (usually through a faulty windshield frame seal). The water caused the plastic to come unglued, exposing the copper wires to moisture. The wires would then decay and cause a 'rupture' in the electrical signal going to the gauges. Not all gauges would be affected, which is way some work and some don't.
A simple fix is to pull the gauge cluster out, (4-6 Phillips head screws on the overlay) and then I believe 4 Phillips to remove the gauge cluster.
Turn it over to see if all of the copper wires are still in one piece.

I just bought an 89' YJ and it has two gas gauges in it. Neither of which work correctly. The original gauges I believe have been disconnected, clock doesn't work, oil pressure doesn't read, fuel always says "full". There is another gauge cluster on the bottom that has Temp, Oil Pressure, and Gas gauge. When I fill up the gauge reads 3/4 of a tank, I have been filling up when it reads about 1/4 tank. I don't know much about it, but seems the gas gauge is fine just whatever reads the fuel level must be messed up. Any help would be great!!
