I've had my 12 for two weeks same thing-as well as the inside of the knuckles and surrounding. I've under coated some-sway bar area and back-tub.
I'm in a heavy salt and snow area (although we've had very little this year)-and expect to see some surface rust-as others have said no biggie .

Hey, I am picking up a new 2012 JKUR on January 2 and have been wondering a bit about the rust issue.
I've read a few threads here and opinion seems to be split about the importance of rustproofing. Some individuals advise to rust proof with a commercially applied undercoating, some advise to use Rustoleum and paint the underside of their Jeep by hand and still others claim that nothing needs to be done, that rust on a Jeep is normal and that it is nothing to worry about as long as you are regularly washing off the underside of your Jeep.
I will be using my Rubicon as a DD and for some off roading, overlanding and exploring.
I live in the Atlantic region of Canada and the Jeep will be exposed to a lot of salt, snow and ice for about three to four months.
Your thoughts and opinions would be greatly appreciated.

I've seen some older vehicles with no rust at all. This was because every seal imaginable was leaking oil and coating the whole under body.
I guess one could do their own by just coating the drive shaft and universals with heavy oil. The spinning of same would take care of the rest...

I've owned my 2012 for about 2 days. Mine has the surface rust in the same spot as yours. It's very common on the underside of vehicles to have surface rust on the axle or driveshaft.
Not a biggie, I wouldn't worry about it.

new 2012 JKU - Rust?
Have had my new Jeep for a few days, and just happened to notice this this morning as I was inspecting. Obviously I'm not very familiar with what I'm looking at (given I have to ask this question) but didn't expect to see this. Does this look like rust?
The pic makes it look yellowish due to flash, but in reality it's definitely an orange rust color. Any opinions would help. Will be taking it up with the dealer next week.
