blackout light - for driving with minimum visibility during war.
"The blackout driving light mounted on the left front fender is a hooded light having a sealed beam unit that throws a horizontal diffused low-intensity light beam to illuminate any vertical object. This light is used when the tactical situation does not permit use of service headlights."
below is a modern day version sometimes used on humvees in conjunction with night vision googles
some 4WD clubs even do night runs only using park lights... or these!
