note: LED has + and -, so try switching them the other way...

Just so you have an idea of what you could do. Go to superbrightleds.com and order a few LED's and do the whole dash. If I remember correctly you only need 7 bulbs (one is your 4 wheel drive selector which will light up differently as well) and they are all the 194 style bulb. Really easy and you can color coordinate to your vehicle color.
Just what I was looking for. How to get to the bulb/s behind the speedo? I just ordered LEDs for mine but I'm not sure how difficult it is to get to it...

hopefully you can see it all in the full view pic
Hey sorry this is kind of late here mouse, but which bulbs did u use? the WLED - x, WLED -x4, WLED -x5, or the WLED -x6

I am sort of leaning towards the blue actually... Red sometimes hurts the eyes...

1989JEEPYJ What degree would light them up better 120 or 90?
12-18-2011 04:22 PM
whY402Jay I want to do this to mine, but I need to find out why the lights went out in the first place. Is it a bad dimmer or a wire connection or one bad bulb that turned them all out?

1989JEEPYJ Okay I have an 89 Yj where would I go to get some of the blue LED's?

mouse2959 Something to add abt the dimmer switch if u went the cheap route like I did (I got the single leds 90 deg in green) the dimmer switch won't do anything but turn them on and off. Mine are plenty bright I believe pics are posted earlier in the thread if u want a look. So if u want to control the brightness via the dimmer get a cluster not the singles just something to think abt

mrobison1 Here's mine with blue. Got the 360 deg from superbright LEDs not a good pic taken with my phone .

jfbilbro dunno bout on a 87, but when i pull the dash bezels on my 91, the idiot lights are right there...super easy to get to...didn't have to remove the circuit board...
10-11-2011 11:08 AM
87yj2.5 how did you remove the idiot lights? did you remove the circuit board too? my circuit board has 2 connectors connecting them to the wiring harness and i cant figure out how to unplug them

Thanks bro

jfbilbro to clarify....i changed all the idiot light bulbs, but just used the white ones....the bezel has different color lenses for them so no need to use colored lights......
09-19-2011 03:59 PM
Wranglerkangaroo Did you use different colors for your idiot lights it all one color
09-19-2011 03:31 PM
jfbilbro nothing to taking apart the dash...6 screws for the center section to remove the bezel, 5 screws i believe for the tach and speedo, and then the screws that hold the actual gauges in....lights are just wedge base plug ins....i replaced every one in my dash, including the ones for the idiot lights in just over an hour....
09-19-2011 12:47 PM
Wranglerkangaroo this is very cool indeed, i just need to get a haynes book so i can learn what i need to do to take apart my dash and replace the lights

09-17-2011 10:17 PM
redneck2725 Anyone who did the blue LEDs, will you please post a picture? I'm very interested in doing this mod also, just want to see how it looks.

Thanks in advance!!

thank you for the reply. will definitely have to add this project to my list as well. i use to hate lists (i.e. honey-do list). but since i am now a first time jeep owner i am beginning to love my "i'm in the garage/dog house" list.
