Toonces Even with a 4.0 swap, there's still welding involved because the motor mounts are in a different place and if you're going to go that far, why not take the next step and go with a 5.2 or 5.9 Magnum out of a similar year Dakota, Durango, RAM or Van? Advance Adapters is one source for motor mounts and you'd have to go to at least an AX-15/NV3500 or an auto (45/46RE/RH) from the dodge donor. Hotwire auto has a pretty cool table that shows which years/vehicles have the same ECU types at HotwireAuto - Fuel Injected Wiring Harnesses if you want to keep the gauges the same and the complexity down. You can go to a different ECU bus but you'll need the instrument cluster out of a corresponding TJ at the very least. There are a lot of writeups on the 5.2/5.9 swaps out there as well as 5.0 Ford and just about every Chevy V8 out there. If you want Diesel, there are even a few of them out there too. My personal choice that I've already started collecting parts for is the 5.2L

Oldguy There is no easy answer. Basically you can swap anything into anything if you have enough time and money. The only easy swap would be a 4.0L and that will require an AX15 tranny. The 4 cylinder uses the AX5. If you want to see what is reasonably possible check out

!997 Jeep Wrangler Engine swap

Hey everyone, new to the site and just bought a 97 wrangler with the 4 cycl. I want to swap engines. I need to know what engines will fit, and if tranny need to be changed. Honestly what are my options here. Thanks for all the future answers.
