darkproximity keep an eye on it, if you were empty before then you're losing it somewhere.. and you might start to notice odd behaviors in the clutch, as you may have air in the line now..

darkproximity its not oil, its hydraulic fluid.. its might change color but it should always stay in the system. If its a slave cylinder leaking, then like i posted before, you might as well replace the clutch.. you have to pull the transmission to replace it, and its one of those things, while you're down there you might as well. Clutch is a wear item and it will eventually wear out (if it hasnt already). So you can go the "cheap" route, and just buy a new slave cylinder, pay shop labor to have it installed.. then who knows how long later, have your clutch finally go on you.. then buy a new clutch, new slave cylinder and pay shop labor to have it installed.. so which way is truly cheaper?

MickeYJ I hope it's not a leak. I mean... Oil get used up right? It was hard to take the cap off.. Almost as if it had never been opened before... I almost broke a nail lol

rogerf1970 ok so you have a hydraulic leak, now its one of the 2 locations (master or slave cylinder). I assume you are not going to fix this yourself and you said you didnt know anyone that could help ya out, sooo you have 3 options....
1. "find" someone to fix for ya
2. "Pay" someone to fix for ya
3. Don't fix it

1994 is when they went to an external slave on an AX-5, since she has a 4cy she's got the AX-5 with an internal slave.

MickeYJ So I was able to start my YJ on 2nd gear and was able to park it back n my spot. I did check the inside and I saw no leaks... I also checked the clutch oil thingy.... And this is what I found.
Would this do it?

rogerf1970 MickeYJ--Let's back up a bit... you will need to open up the hood and on the drivers side firewall you will have the Master cylinder (it will look something like this) http://i160.photobucket.com/albums/t.../mastercyl.jpg
take the top off and see if you any fluid (now some have a rubber inner liner that is used as a seal if you have this then this will need to be removed to see the fluid). now open the drivers door and look under the dash where the master cylinder sticks through the firewall and look for any kind of wetness (this will be from the master cylinder leaking). now you will have to crawl under the jeep, slide under behind the drivers tire and look to see if you have the following....
This is similar to what you are looking for..
This is an EXTERNAL Slave cylinder..

If you dont see something like this then see if you have a Metal line running into the bellhousing if so then you have a...
INTERNAL Slave cylinder and it looks like this....

When your done you will know how much fluid is in the master,if the master is leaking on the inside,and if you have a internal or external slave cylinder...Now with this information we can help you better.. let us know..

BDK A internal slave replacement at a shop your looking at $800+, it is about 5+ hours of labor.

The AX-5 for that year is a internal slave, 1993 was the first external year. And the 2.5 never had a AX15 behind it!

Replacing the internal slave isn't as difficult as it sounds...
I believe they might have, didn't the AX-15 come out then?

And it's easy if it's been done before, if its never been done it sucks

Replacing the internal slave isn't as difficult as it sounds...

Remove the exhaust header, remove the 2 nuts on the bottom of the skidplate, remove skidplate (make sure you use a jack to hold the transmission up), then unbolt the tranny and shifters, as well as the rear driveshaft. From there it should be downhill. Takes me about an hour to do all of that.

Putting it back in takes a bit longer, about an hour and a half or so. Can all be done for the cost of the part. $70 for the cheapie from AutoZone or $180 for an OEM equivalent from Napa.

You do business with an awesome shop then. I've had family members do that and have gotten burned. Lesson learned in my area. I don't pay shops for anything except machine work though, so I'm good.

darkproximity Not true.. had a shop install a clutch disc backwards.. not only did it destroy the pressure plate but shot a hole through my bellhousing and into the gear box.. I purchased the clutch stage 3 kit and brought it to them.. spec was gracious enough to send me a new one even though it was installed wrong, so the shop didn't have to pay for that, and they sent the transmission to be welded up and they paid for that.. I could've been a dick and made them buy a whole new trans and clutch but I knew the owner.. clutches are wear items either way, and premature failure can be taken up with the manufacturer for warranty, any problems with labor and the shop will warranty.. id say save on rediculous mark up and buy a kit online..

Peepers I paid about $300 for labor and $160 for the clutch kit. And another $70 for a new fly wheel because these ones are not supposed to be resurfaced.


1. Twin Mass Flywheel
2. Clutch Disc
3. Clutch Release Bearing
4. Fillister Head Screw
5. Clutch Release Fork Lever
6. Ball Pin
7. Spring Clip

This isn't an exact diagram, but what happened to my jeep when what your talking about happened is the clutch relase bearing some how moved and jammed sideways in the clutch release fork. It felt like it would go into gear when parked, but it really wouldn't. I already had ordered the clutch kit, so I just had them replace everything while they were in there.

Don't bring your own parts if your taking it to a shop. I know its a little more expensive, but if something were to break/go wrong they will not warranty the work.

kdub i had same problem. replaced master cylinder.$50 buck at advanced.mine leaked on the firewall behind the brake peddle.go look and see if the paint is coming off the firewall,thats a good indication off whats going on.and u will have to bleed the system when u change it out.

darkproximity Thats with new clutch, master and slave cylinders, resurfacing flywheel, and install.. just depends on what they charge for labor and resurfacing the flywheel.. and again thats high ball.. could be less

darkproximity depends if the shop you take it to rapes you on the prices.. if i were you i'd buy the parts online and find a shop that will install them for you.. you'll want to get a whole new clutch kit, which should come with everything needed.. depending on the alldata book time (what most shops use) they will charge by that time.. if you'd like i should be able to get you the actual book time for the replacement.. then you can find a good reputable shop with reasonable hourly labor prices.. if i had to guesstimate id say maybe $700 tops

MickeYJ No I have anyone... I couldn't do that.. I'd have to take it somewhere. I guess I should check the clutch fluid thingy. And no I haven't seen any leaks on the ground. Oh and no the transmission wasn't slippin but it was starting to give trouble shifting from neutral to 1st and reverse mostly.. Just for the last week or so.
If what u said needs replacement ... How much am I looking at? Apprx

darkproximity do you have someone who can give you a hand? they'll need to sit in the jeep and depress the clutch, while you check the clutch master cylinder.. if the fluid level rises when they push the clutch in then the master cylinder is likely bad.. check for any leaking fluid while you're under there.. but from the sound of it, if you can get it in gear while the jeep is off then its *probably* a bad pressure plate or disc..

did you notice the transmission slipping at all lately?

darkproximity I believe the slave cylinder is internal on that transmission.. which would make replacing that a chore and a half.. if it is the slave cylinder you'll probably want to just replace the clutch while you're at it..

are you able to put the transmission into gear when the jeep is off?
