|sandbiker||The vaccum line that operates the vent switch is connected to the black box under the battery. the switch may appear to work but may not completly open or close the vents without full vaccum. Worked for me...|

|sandbiker||Just fixed mine yesterday. I have an 01 tj but I think they are the same. There is a vacume line that runs the switch, mind fell loose. it is located about 8 inches directly the batery. small 1/16 of an inch vacume hose. crawl under the passenger side and look up you should see it. just push it mack on the mail adapter to a black box. If you cant find it PM me and I will take a pic and try and post|

|bobbav||UPDATE. Well, I crawled underneath to see the 'vacuum pods' that control the air control. All of them are moving as they should. When I select the main vents, the lever moves perfectly, so I think I have a disconnected 'duct' or a blockage....|

|Agrothe||On my jeep when i get going faster you can here something suck shut and air will not come out the dash only the defrost and the floor vents, what is this?|

Now where do i find that little plastic connector piece to make the middle vacuum actuator move?

|lensam||Then it would be to hot to work on it!!!|

|bobbav||Just confirmed even my LEFT vent doesn't work. It was the left and right dimisters (fed by the flexible duct) that work. So, the rattle I am hearing, and the fact that no vents work point to SOMETHING being broke in there. Too damn cold to get into it now. Why doesn't this crap happen in the summer|

|Phaeton||Remove the cover and steel plate behind it. You can look but it is easier to remove the drivers seat.|

|bobbav||Phaeton - THANKS! Do I need to remove the cover under the steering column and knee bolster, or can I get at all of this without doing that?|

|TLATEOTW||it is working but it seems week and doesn't go all the way, this pic is from all-data?|
|01-19-2012 08:08 AM|
|Phaeton||That picture is like our 97. I would assume an 02 would be the same. Switch the actuator with the other one and see if it is faulty.|

another thing, the one for the center vents is week and doesn't fully close, it works when i push it manually. i found no leaks in the tubes. if i disamble it will i be able to clean/grease its mechanical parts? thanks

|bobbav||What's weirder is that the LEFT vent works fine! It's only the center and right vents?????|
|01-17-2012 01:22 PM|
|bobbav||Excellent info, Guys! I am hearing some type of 'rattle' coming from the dash area recently, so I am wondering if that is what it is?????|
|01-17-2012 08:31 AM|
It was the middle actuator arm that was broke off on mine if I remember correctly. This is what it looks like under there.

It's only a small black plastic tube, and unfortunately they crack or break altogether.
You can find a hard polyethylene tubing from home depot, a roll of it is about 3 dollars. You can replace all of the tubing, or just a section of it.
Caution: be careful not to pull the tubing too hard on the firewall, where it connects inside the firewall. It It goes into a insolation type foam, and it's a PITA to get the tube if you push it in too far. I recommend working on the tubing from the T joint out. Easy access.

|bobbav||GREAT INFO, GUYS! I have to try all of these suggestions. I was working a month ago, and now....nada!|

|srad600||This is some good info Ill have to check out because recently all of my dash vents seam to have stopped working. Defrost works and it seams like the floor vent works too. When I switch it to dash vents I hear the blower working hard but nothing comes out the vents. Air comes out the tiny lil part above the left and right most vents but nothing thats gonna heat the damn Jeep. Now I just need a good enough weather day to do all this and more.|

|SXR311||Have you checked the vacuum tube under the hood? Above the battery there should be a small T valve that exits the firewall. My plastic tube had cracked and it was not drawing any vacuum which is what controls the flapper to the vents. By default it will work on defrost, but not the vents if is loses vacuum.|

|Phaeton||I had the same problem. Pull your drivers seat and lay under the dash. One of the control arms is probably broke off. Run a sheet metal screw thru the center of it and all is good.|

|Pontiackid87||Looks like it might be time to clean out the duct's you'd be surprised where mice can make a nest..|
|01-16-2012 01:12 AM|
|Unlimited-Akita||I just looked up a diagram of it and for the life of me I can not think of could have blocked it short of, well I dont even know. The right side looks to have a hose going to it that could have possibly collapsed but the center ducting looks to be hard plastic. Any chance something got in there and nested? Have you done anything under the dash the past couple days?|

HELP! No air coming out of my center and right vents!
Hi Everyone. So, when I slide the air control to direct air to the vents in the dash, only my left vent works! The center and right ones do not, BUT, the defrost vent (on top of the right vent) works .
I know the defrost vents have a seperate 'tube' to direct the air, but for the life of me I cannot figure out what could have happened to cause the center and right main vents to not 'blow'.
Any feedback would be much appreciated!
