Remus nailed it. Same thing I would have suggested. Check your coax again, may need a different antenna or may need to move the mount. If you have access to another SWR meter, check it with that. When I tune a system, I always check it with two separate SWR meters to make sure one is not defective & giving false readings.

kylekae I'm have removed the spring and will a 2 ft adjustable. Why is the Swr so high if its all hooked up right. I have watched videos and they have a low swr before tuning?

The Toolman OK, your antenna is still too long. Have you removed the spring yet? Also, if you want to keep the spring, & your vehicle is bonded well. You may need to switch to a different type of antenna.

kylekae The meter is an opek swr-2t 1 is 2.5
20 is 3 and 4 is 3.5

What brand of meter are you using? What is your SWR at channel 1, 20, & 40? Three separate readings.

The Toolman Did you make sure the paint was removed to bare metal when you installed the antenna mounting stud? After that, you are down to adjusting the antenna. In that case, refer to the "Adjusting SWR thread.

kylekae I now have a ground wire and the SWR is 3.5 a little better but now what?

lol, no problem, on mobile now & at work, but will help ya out when I get in from work this evening. I will agree with some of the responses that have been added already ..... Get a ground strap from the "help" section at just about any auto parts store & connect it from the main body to your tailgate & see what happens

Yes...those tailgate mounts are notorious for having grounding problems. The tailgate isn't always grounded to the body very well. I think some people run a ground strap from the tailgate directly to the body (you could prolly do it on the inside where it'll be a clean install--make sure you grind away the paint to ensure a good, metal on metal connection) and that solves their problems.

whiteyj I'd dump the spring in your setup and add a ground wire from the mount to the chasis.

Remus_Redbone Take the spring out of the stack and thread the antenna directly in the stud mount and check your SWR. Springs can help or hurt your SWR, depending on your antenna length.

I have a cb radio antenna I'm trying to tune and my swr is 10 I've spent hours messing with the adjustable tip, and removing parts of my connection like the spring and I think I may have a bad ground but I'm not really sure what a ground for a cb antenna mount looks like. This is good information to know when someone starts talking about "grounding" your vehicle. I could not explain it any better than these guys in the two links below. I will come back & put it in my own words when I have time though.
