There is no computer. There is a cable that runs from the throttle to the trans to let the trans know how much you are pressing on the gas. The more the gas, the later the shift. The less gas, shift sooner. Take 10 seconds to move. And trial and error will fix it. Sounds like they are blowing more smoke up your ......

siafu Need a good mechanic.....yes. I am just trying to figure out what the problem might be without tearing it all apart looking.

Dropping the pan gets rid of less than 5 quarts, there are still another 4+ quarts of ATF left in the lines, cooler, and torque converter. Flushing is the only way to replace all of the ATF.

Joshpeb2 flushing is a joke. Do it right and drop the pan. Simple job you can do yourself. Personally my problem would be the fact that it didn't do it until you got it back from them and THEN they lied to you about reprogramming a non computer trans. I would tell them they have one option and that is to fix it right.

TJ Automatic Transmission Problem

Hello all, I am having a problem with my transmission that I am looking for ideas with. Here is the history:

2002 Wrangler Sahara 4.0L automatic transmission. I bought it with 70,000 miles. It had the rear-main seal leaking and the valve cover leaking. I took it in for servicing and after they fixed it, the transmission was driving horribly. Slipping out of gear, not up shifting or down shifting properly. Just all over the place.

I took it back and they "fixed" it they said, by re-programming the memory on the transmission. Some reason it had dumped it and was all over the place electronically.

As of now, the "fix" they performed was a dramatic improvement however there is still a problem. When giving it hard gas from stop, it shifts just fine. The problem happens when going from stop slowly and accellerating slowly. When it shifts from second to third, the RPMs jump up like it is in neutral too long before the 3rd gear engages. This is the only problem and it seems small, but it is annoying.

I ended up taking it to the dealer this time to see if they could "re-program" the transmission for me and they said that my transmission is not computer controlled and had nothing to program.!?!?!?!?! They said it might be due to extremely dirty oil.

They wanted $270 for the oil service. I took it back to the original mechanic where the problem began and told them what the dealer said. They agreed the oil was very dirty and wanted to start there for troubleshooting. After a system "flush" the problem still exists. One thing they noted is on their flushing machine there is a pressure gauge when it is flushing a transmission, and when it was doing mine, the needle was jumping all over the place.

Could it be an internal pump going bad in my transmission? It is possible it has nothing to do with them working on the rear main seal, even though they had to disconnect it to move it out of the way? I hate the idea of having to re-build a transmission for no reason if it is a simple electronic switch or something.
