|nitroz680||yea you wont have any trouble with rubber tubing from autozone or some place similar. All you need is like 3-4 inches, they'll probably give it to you for free.|

|bluehash||I had a question regarding the material placed between the two pipes. The pipes get very hot. Is it ok to place a rubber piece between them?|

If you have the same noise I had, then all you take out is the glove box. open the glove box, empty it out, look on both sides, if you push the sides of the glove box towards the inside, it will release the tabs holding it from falling out, then just lift it out. Same procedure when you will have to change the in cabin air filters. once the glove box is out, look inside towards the radio and you will clearly see the 2 metal A/C pipes. Tadaa. Those were the pipes that were causing my buzzing sound on cold mornings.

So I found these are instructions about the lower dash removal. (Steps 1-3)
I have this noise and I just want to verify if this is the piece you need to remove to see where the shifter cable is rubbing.

|RZNCAIN||Took it to the dealer. Sure enough the A/C lines were vibrating against the firewall. They insulated them and we are good to go.|

Right off the bat, I want to thank Rich331MX for this fix. I remember pretty much exaclty a year ago, after I had ordered my Jeep, but had not yet received it, I was constantly on this site reading up on stuff and I remember seeing this problem/solution thread. Well, this winter, when the temps started getting colder, I noticed this buzzing sound coming from behind the radio, only on light acceleration, and only for the first minute after start-up on very cold mornings. I only got around to it this week, mostly because it is very short lived, but most likely because I already knew what the fix was. So I cut a 3" piece of Heater hose that I had left over from extending my bump stops (Something I also learned on this site), cut a slit length wise, and slipped it over the bottom metal pipe and shoved it in a bit til it was good and tight. At first, I wasn't sure that this would do the trick, but after 2 mornings of -16C, absolutely no more buzzing. This was literally a 2 minutes fix. Most of that was emptying the glove box and then putting everything back in.
After almost a year of ownership, this would have been the only reason I would have needed to go to the dealership. My Jeep has been absolutely flawless since day one. And thanks to this Thread, A trip to the dealership has been avoided, and most likely, they would have torn up the whole dash and other stuff only to put it back together with other squeaks and rattles and I'd still have the buzzing.

I should also mention that you will be able to move your console piece the furthest out of the way if you are in 4LO and either 2nd, 4th, 6th, or reverse.
i did try to take off my shift knobs, and had i been able to take them off successfully, i would have completely destroyed them, so i elected to leave them on...if you are able to take them off, this will make your job a lot easier.

here is what you need to do...
the bottom of your dash has a netted piece that looks like it would be used to hold a map. pry that off, carefully. additionally, pull on the center console, in a manual, there is no need to remove shift knobs.
move the console all the way aft. expose the black shift cable on the left side of the now opened dash area.
if this is the culprit, you will see that the cable is rubbing into the dash. take a piece of heater hose and wrap it around the shift cable. it should be snug between the cable and the dash.
put everything back together.

The hose behind the heat duct was a red herring. After tearing more of the dash apart, I discovered my shift cable was rubbing into the dash panel. I put a rubber hose around the shift cable to damp out the vibration and it is gone. I am at work and don't have pictures, but its identical to what HGJKRubi did.
If people want more instruction, let me know...

Hey everyone, I've been pretty frustrated with the rattling behind my dash. Yesterday, I had some free time, so I took my whole dash apart, took the radio out, took off the center console, the works.
I took pieces out part by part, and then installed fixes one by one. Each time I put a "fix" in, I drove around the block to see if the rattling was still there.
After many hours diagnosing, I got very familiar with the sound. In my opinion and in specifically for my Jeep, it was not metal, it was definitely plastic rattling. It didn't sound "tinny" like a pop can, it sounded like it was already partially damped, like only plastic sounds. After all, I tried the aluminum heating duct fix and it offered no reduction in rattle.
I removed the console to see if I could get to the shifter cable, but it wouldnt have mattered because with the whole dash apart, I could tell the rattle was coming from within the dash.
So after so many hours, I got fed up and decided to put it all back together. The very last thing I did was wedge a section of heater hose behind the highlighted plastic part labeled "the culprit".
Wouldn't ya know, on my test drive, I enjoyed rattle free operation throughout my entire range of acceleration.
I wouldn't wish this rattle on my worst enemy, but then again, my worst enemy probably wouldnt drive a Jeep!

yesterday I attempted to fix the problem since it was very hot outside, a balmy 18 deg.
Didn't help,so not sure on how to explain the sound but sure resembles and electric engraver or an old time electric vibrating football game.

|nitroz680||I have tried everything suggested in this thread to alleviate the rattling in my 2013 to no avail. I still have the problem, seems like on and off though, not entirely consistent.|

Just ran across this thread after doing a search.
Bought my 2013 jk unlimited MOAB last Aug.Did notice this constant buzz type of rattle somewhere in center portion behind dash 4 months later,only when cold for the first 5 minutes under light acceleration.Here in Iowa its been the norm for 20 below air temp.Anyone know if the 2013 have had the same issue concerning to coolant lines in glove box area?

|2011jkunl||I had a vibration that was absolutely driving me bonkers and I went through everything: heater lines, shifter cable, a-pillar cover, sun visors and even the fender liners. The vibration seemed to be coming from the dash area but it turns out that the source of the vibration was from the extra gas cap keys and a flashlight I keep in the center console. I guess it goes without saying, but no matter where it seems the noise is coming from, check your glove box and console box and adjust random loose items before you go tearing into your dash. On the plus side I fixed all the stuff that could eventually lead to noise.|

I had the aluminum heater vibration but mine were spread apart from the factory. So, I used a zip tie and actually pulled them together a bit (not touching) so there was pressure on both lines..problem solved!
Seems like no matter how you do it, those lines are too long to not have some type of pressure on them (either from spreading apart or tying together).

Here's what I did to eliminate this vibration. Installed a rubber hose around the shifter cable where it runs under the dash. Zip tied it tight and the noise is GONE!!!
