Lil Black JK If it's not the refinery causing it, what is the excuse now to raise the gase price over .50/gal in the last couple weeks?

Woofer71 @moe thanks for the input I was wondering the same as cahill4225 Im in the similar boat not ready for expensive Mod and not ready for insurance premiums either

moe Cayhill the Cliffs isn't that bad during the dryer season. A stock rig with All Terrain's and some guidance you can have a great time and not get into too much trouble. I would suggest though that you head out to the Badlands first, less slick stuff (the cliffs is primarily a slick blue clay) and there are a ton of open areas for you to get a good idea of what you and your Jeep can/can't handle.

When you get some mods and/or tires the Cliffs will be a true challenge. It has a lot of up and downs, wicked hill climbs, creeks and draws are the most challenging part of the park. When you add even a slight sprinkle to the ground it makes the "easy" trails a challenge. I have wheeled a lot of places and if you can wheel at the Cliffs you can wheel anywhere.

cahill4225 Forgive my ignorance, just bought my 1st wrangler and want to take it on some trails. But, the jeep is just stock - no fancy upgrades. Would I be biting off too much by hitting up the cliff with my stock ride and limited experience? I don't want to trash my jeep the first time out. There are some crazy youtube videos from the cliffs. Don't think my standard ride would cut it on the videos I saw. Long and short for a newbie with stock ride, no wench, would I be able to enjoy the cliffs (and not trash the new ride.) Thanks for any info everyone.

Cliff's Run Update

Hey guys. Won't be able to make it this weekend. I went out again today to recheck my 4x4 linkage and ended up blowing out my 4-wheel drive. Got some land I have permission to be on and was trying to dig up the trails a little by beating on my Jeep a little and I ended up stretching my Transfercase chain that locks down 4-wheel. So I am gonna need to drop the trans again and get this fixed before I can do any playing in the mud again. It looks like it was going to be really cold this weekend anyhow and things always go bad in the cold. We will definitely have to go once the warm weather gets here! I apologize for the inconvienience and will keep you updated.

Cliff's update

Well, so far the weather prediction is looking like it is gonna be pretty cold for the weekend, but it is still too early to tell. If it doesn't break freezing for Saturday, I am probably not going to make the run out. I would hate to have any problems with my Jeep or even get stuck in the freezing cold. When it is cold out, the mud becomes ice and anything left on your Jeep will freeze. To make matters worse, if by chance something did happen and a retrieve needed to be postponed a day, I wouldn't want my Jeep to be froze in the ground overnight. Hopefully the temp climbs up a bit. I know I was pretty pumped about the trip, but when it is cold, things break. No two ways around it. Freezing temps make it harder for you first timeres also. It is a toss up. I will be posting again on Thrusday as to a final decision.

Cliff's run 2-11-12

Ok guys, looks like it is gonna be pretty cold this weekend. This means there is gonna be ice and winching is gonna suck. I am probably still gonna go. As far as anybody else showing up, I don't know. Like I said, getting stuck in the bitter cold sucks and ice in the ruts makes things a bit harder. Let me know if those of you that are going would rather do this some other time. If I end up not going this weekend, I am probably going to go to the BADLANDS for "freeze-out day" on the 18th. I may do both if I don't hear any complaints about this Saturday. Like I said, I am good to go!

Dana 30 Rebuild

OK guys. I finally got my front-end back together after 2 days of turmoil. So far everything is in great shape. I have to go hit some trails tommorrow to make syre that my 4-wheel drive is locking in good. So, if all goes well and the weather is decent, The Cliff's will be a go. I would rather not go on a rainy day, the place gets sloppy nasty when it is raining. So I guess that this weekend is the day to get away. See you then.

Here are some shots of the completed project.

DANA 30 Rebuild

Here are a few shots of my axle after I got everything cleaned and ready for rebuild. The old gear oil was as thick as mud and got everywhere!

Cliff's update

OK Jeepers. Just got my front axle all tore apart and prept for rebuild. YIKES!!!! 5 1/2 hours of headache and crawling around underneath it! At least now I will have all new seals and fresh gear oil in it. It wasn't as bad as I thought. Only the pinion gear seal was leaking, and the gear oil that had came out was sooooo thick, it looked like it had never been changed and had plenty of synthetics added to it! The shit got everywhere in the garage, but I am finished with the worst part and now "IT'S MILLER TIME!!!" Camera ran out of battery life, so I am going to take some photos of parts and the axle and will post them as soon as I can. Can't wait for next weekend!

cavsvet74 The little multi channel walkie talkies work well here also.

Unfortunately, I cannot make the 11th.

Cliff's Run 2-11-12

Cool. Found out that BP signed their contract last night at 11pm, so the strike is a no go. Yes, the Cliff's will be pretty muddy. See you there.

mtu1293 Depending on the weather I may be in, but will be in the RZR not a jeep - lol. As for the Whiting Refinery, that's bullcrap how the gas prices are effected, since most of that gas is sent to Canada. With the weather we've been having it's probably going to be a big mud bog, heck it's muddy there during droughts - lol.

Mike5087 Sweet thanks for the tips. I also need to get my hands on a cb. My buddy has one and they are great on the trail (I've gone with him a few times). Well I'm hoping I can get out there. Sounds like its shaping up to be a good one!

Cliff's run! 2-11-21

First of all, thanks for the CB tip. I need to reinstall mine! There are plenty of low level extreme trails and family trails. Trail #1 is the outskirt of the park and is fairly easy with some mud some of the other trails will run you right through the heart of the place and are not too bad either, just don't get into any big holes and check anything filled with water first and you will be fine! WATCH OUT FOR LORI'S HOLLAR!! This is on trail #1 and you will need to find a way around it, or turn around. This is where I almost rolled! I think once you get there and see what the trails are like, you should know your limits.
02-01-2012 03:55 PM
Mike5087 They have many fairly easy trails? It will be about my 3rd time going out(never to cliffs). I try to avoid the more complicated trails due to lack of experience and just the new to not destroy my ride just yet!!
02-01-2012 01:04 PM
jkaufman_95 A CB is highly recommended for groups anywhere. Nice to have the guy in front of you tell you watch that ledge or the guy behind you tell you your strap is dragging the ground (AGAIN)

Cliff's run! 2-11-21

They do have some rules to abide. A rolebar is required, and factory will be fine, as long as you have one. Yes you will need a flag. It must be safety orange and 2 feet above the highest point on the truck. They used to rent flags for $5, but you must leave them $40 and you get back $35 at the end of the day. They also sell flags for $25 maybey. You don't have to have a winch, but it is recommended for the higher level trails. I sort of know my way around a little. I was planning to take trail #1 first, which runs the perimeter of the park which is 300 acres. Then once we make it back, we can try some of the higher level trails. I have a wich and will help anybody that gets stuck that is in this little party out if I can. (I will not pull anybody out who just continually gets stuck however.)That makes for a long boring day for everybody. They hand you a little map if you ask for it in the office, but it isn't very accurate. It would be best if we all stick together. I know the first time I went, it was very easy to get lost and run in a circle. The place is rather impressive.I must warn those of you who have never been, or very little off raod experience. These trails are intense, tons of possibilities for roll-overs on the higher level trails if you aren't careful. I am sure that if we can all get together, it will be safe and fun if we watch eachothers backs. Everybody have an orange pine tree air freshener on the rearview mirror (if you have one) so we can tell who is who. If not, most of the Jeeps gather into a big crowd anyhow, just ask! I think that covers it. Like I said. I am planning to be there by 9:00am and will be leaving the parking lot by 9:30am. The park closes at 4:00pm and all vehicles must be out of the lot by 4:30pm. See you there.

95yjjrp i would like to go, but my seat belts are broke, drives belt is fully extended and pass side belt will not extend. and don't have money for new belts right now. otherwise i would be done to go.

6InARowMakesItGo iv'e never been to the cliffs and i have a few questions about their rules. first, does my factory roll bar cut it? common sense says yes but i've had a hard time confirming this. second, do i need a winch? third, i have a firestick that i plan to hang my flag from. is the firestick allowed? last, does the flag have to be orange and how tall does it have to be? their rules seem pretty simple but some places can be kind of anal about the small things. i just don't want to show up and then not be allowed in.

Hey my new pals!

Just thought I would let you guys in on a little secret too. I heard it through the grapevine that BP AAMCO oil refinery in Whiting, IN is going on strike possibly. Gas is gonna be jumping up about $0.50/gal. Be ready! This means less wheelin for me this summer. I am a medical student and am barely makin it right now because of school.

So back to the Cliff's run. I plan to arrive at 9:00am and will probably roll out of the parking lot soon after, unless I get stuck talking Jeep. Just keep an eye out for my Jeep and I will do the same. Hopefully we can hook up. I am sure there will be lots of other Jeeps around. Last time I was there, there was about 12, myself included and it was a crappy, rainy afternoon.

I'm down with that!

POST-ITS. I like it! Looks like they are going to be sponsoring a few cool events this year. Check out their website @ My little bro is going to try to make it too. He has a cherokee. Try not to bash him too bad, he doesn't take it too well ..LOL

Mike5087 Haha no. But now I might just to see the reaction I get! What would your response be if you walked out to your Jeep and saw a post it with "cliffs run the 11th" haha I'd get a kick outta it

Cliff's run! 2-11-21

As of right now, my parts for my front axle are in transit and will be here for me to rebuild this weekend. By the way things are looking, let's plan for the weekend of the 11th of February. It will be a Saturday that I will be going so that everybody can get the week over with and ted to the homelife. I live in NW Indiana, about 30 miles from the state line in Portage. I am wanting to get to there around opening time so I can get my moneys worth! I was there last summer and after 6 hours, it can get boring, but I spent a lot of the day winching and almost rolling my Jeep down a nice gully. It was raining and I got there kind of late after making a wrong turn, so you can immagine how the day went. but the place is intense and I kind of know my way around it a bit, so should turn out to be a kick-ass day. I will keep you guys informed.
