|Dare2BSquare||It seldom gets VERY cold here in Arkansas. Of course, the 95 yj doesn't have much of a heater either. I am going to try leaving my windjammer on during the winter with the soft top on. That way I am only heating half of the cockpit more or less. See how that works. (won't really work if you need the back seat for passengers.)|

The entire soft top w/ bows attached comes off with 4 screws in about 10 minutes. It reattaches in about as much time, ready to be put up again.
You can buy a cover that covers and protects the folded soft top (wraps around the bows and all) for about $30. You just keep the assembly in your garage or closet until you are ready to reattach it in the Spring.

|spdkilz02||is the hard top able to be put on with the soft top in the down position? or would i have to completely remove the soft top frame and all to install the hard top? i basically only want the hard top for winter or maybe if im going on a long haul somewhere where i wouldnt want to hear the window noise the whole way.|

The most important component is hard doors.
The next is a soft top, because if you have only the hard top (assuming you want a soft top for summer use) you have to buy the top, the bows, the window surrounds and other hardware.
If you already have a soft top, to use a hard top, you only need the hard top, and these can be had for $800 or so, and bolt right on with no need for extra parts.
The hard top, if you have to buy one, is like money in the bank in that when you sell your Jeep eventually, you sell it with the soft top and sell the hard top separately and get your whole $800 back.
Of course, if you don't care about ever having a soft top, and being able to put it down on nice summer days/nights, then only a hard top is fine. But in that case, a Ford Escape or something would seem to make more sense for creature comforts, especially for on-road use only.

ya here in the winter it is usually in the low 20s to 10s. and then with windchill alot of times singe digits or lower...
my sister used to have 2 jeeps and both of them were really cold in the winter and the one had a new top just put on.

I found a 2006 sport at a dealership just today that has 9K miles on it and they are asking 17K. only thing i didnt like about it is that it is silver and has a soft top. i can live with the color but i would have to purchase a hard top for winter driving that is for sure.|

My FIRST suggestion is to take one of those trips down south to buy your Jeep.
I wouldn't buy one from up north if my life depended upon it: RUST. I've lived in New England, Alaska, and other places, and anywhere they use salt, urea, or much sand on winter roads, you get rust started, and rust never sleeps.
I just picked up a 2000TJ Sport w/ 80K on it here in Texas where I now live, and it looks absolutely NEW top-to-bottom except for the soft top (toasted) and faded roll bar pads (fabric spray dye/paint made them look brand new again). I paid $8800, and then $225 for a new Smittybilt "Outlander" top from Collins Bros. Jeep (good folks that will mailorder).
The underside is so rust free (not even surface rust coating)that after a power wash it looks as nice as a 2006 demo Jeep at a dealership. The original exhaust hardware (nuts/threads) can be loosened w/out penetrating oil or a Sawzall! When you can find exhaust components with no rust, you KNOW the rest is clean as a whistle. Places w/ smooth roads keep suspension wear to a minimum as well. My OEM 80k mile shocks were good-as-new, though one front sway bar link was worn ($14 for a new one on ebay).
Beyond that, look for a TJ that has never been off-road. If the skid plates have scratches, keep looking. Lots of gals and girls buy Jeeps because they are "Cute" and treat them very nicely. 80K miles of this beats 40K of a "manly-man" proving his manhood by bashing on his Jeep.
Don't worry about the radiator. When they leak, its a slow leak at the plastic tank gasket giving you plenty of time to get a new one. All metal replacements can be had for UNDER $150 with a lifetime warranty.
You also might want to replace the serpentine belt pulley bearings on a higher mileage Jeep (about $50 for all of them) and they are easy to do yourself.
Other than that, most TJs seems to last a LONG time if you get a good one that hasn't been abused.
I'd go for a 4.0 engine as well. Better resale, handles A/C easily, and if I take it really easy, I get 24mpg (5 speed, 3.78 rear end) driving it locally (rural 2-lane roads, not city streets or Interstate). You won't do much better w/ a four banger, and lots of folks complain they are slow on Interstates.

|mud707||I've had 4 jeeps in the past and they all have been pretty durable. My daily driver is a 01 sport and the only problem I had on it was my right front brake caliper locked up on me and i just replaced it for $30 from advance.|

|mrbigjeep||this may be rare but a buddy of mine had a cherokee with the 4.0 and it was still running when he sold it at 250,000 miles...plus he had bigger tires which means it told him less miles then he was goin so it was at least 250,000....thats pretty darn good if you ask me|

Found some Jeeps
Ok, as most of you know im looking for my first wrangler. Trying to find one that is a 2000 or newer. I have found a couple at some dealerships and some private sellers. So now the question is, is there really anything that I need to worry about with a Jeep that has higher mileage, I have found some 2004 with about 50K miles on them. Im basically going to be using this Jeep as my daily driver and it may be in for some trips to VA or maybe FL. So any input you guys/girls could give me would be greatly appreciated.
