You can of course do it that way, that is how the FSM (which I for several model year TJs) describes the procedure.
However, doing it that way also increases the odds of damage to the power steering pump impeller from cavitation from the presence of air bubbles present before the bleeding procedure is complete. Doing the procedure I described is a more conservative method which removes that potential because it will be bled before it is first operated. Do enough power steering work and you'll understand after hearing that screeching from cavitation by not having bled it before starting the engine.

While Jerry Bransford may know a few things he is absolutely wrong in this case. The write up is correct as the MANUFACTURER recommends starting the engine and allowing it to run for a few seconds to purge the air. You want to fill the reservoir and then wait at least 2 minutes prior to starting your engine and letting it run for a few seconds to allow the air to escape then turning it off and rechecking the fluid level. Repeat until the fluid level is stable. Once the fluid level is stable then you raise the front wheels off the ground and cycle the wheel lock to lock at least 20 times. Afterwards lower the vehicle back to the ground before starting the engine once more to see if the fluid level is stable and there is no foam or milky appearance.

O/P most likely deleted them from, or closed out his Photo Bucket Account. OR the other reason they won't show up, is he moved them to another Folder in his P/B Account, which would render the Link invalid.
After 3 years, it's the most logical reason.

nice right up, that is the most neglected fluid, next would be brake fluid.
just gotta make sure not to run that pump when the fluid is out, like you said.

It was all great until you said to start the Jeep to cycle the steering back & forth to bleed the air out. The engine should not be started until the system is bled or the the pump vanes can be damaged from the resulting cavitation you may or may not be able to hear.
To bleed the air out, jack up the front end so the tires are off the ground and then cycle the steering fully back & forth 25-40 times, adding fresh PS fluid as needed. Then you can start the engine.

Then rout the return line down in front of the axle over your bucket.
Then top off the pump with new fluid.
Now you will need 2 people. Have one person sit in the jeep and start it while the other watches the fluid come out when the flow starts to slow or you start to hear the pump cavitate shut it off. Then top it off again and repeat. It will take 3 to 4 times and you will have nice clean fluid coming out of the hose.
Now put the hose and clamp back on the pump and fill the pump up to the fill mark. Start the jeep and cycle the wheel from lock to lock a few times to help purge all air. Check the level again and take it for a test drive. I would check it one more time after that. Then your all done.

HOW TO: Flush/change your tj's power steering fluid
Okay today i flushed my power steering fluid. Mine was the original fluid from 99 it was nasty and has about 112k miles on it.The ps fluid seems to be neglected on most vehicles. By changing it you can help extend the life of your pump and box.
The stuff you will need will be 2 quarts of ps fluid. Later tj's use ATF so check to see what you have. It can be synthetic or not. You will also need a catch pan/bucket,pair of pliers and i used a suction gun but it isn't needed.
Next pop the hood and remove the power steering cap.
Then i used a suction gun to suck out what was in the resivor.
There are two lines the high pressure feed line and the low pressur return.
we are only deeling with the reurn line. It runs from the box (the one i'm pinting to) to the back of the resivor.
Now we need to make somthing to plug up the hole on the resivor when we remove the line. I used a small pieace of hose and a wire nut.
Then use the pliers and slide the hose clamp back.
Then remove the hose and put the plug on the nipple of the resivor. The faster you are the less mess you will make.
