HebrewHammer The best way to convert it to a manual would to go buy a manual jeep its easier and probably cheaper.

If u were trying to rock crawl it would be best to leave it auto though
Manual is more fun

Square_Eyes Here is a "how things work" on torque converters, that being said, I love my manual trans and i haven't had any problems rock crawling and find that it's more of a challenge. I just feel blah when I drive an auto and find it boring at best lol have fun with you're build hope this helps in some way

Not quite. At rock crawling speeds or while accelerating, an automatic actually puts more power to the ground through the magic of torque multiplication via the automatic's torque converter. With the same size tires and axle ratios, 2-3X greater low end torque is available with an automatic than with a manual transmission. Fact.

Which is one reason rock crawlers use more automatics and why I converted my previous '97 TJ from a manual to an automatic 6-7 years ago. Which is the reason I was finally able to make it up three particular obstacles on a particular rock crawling course without the use of my winch for the first time. I had to winch up the same three obstacles every year with my previous AX-15 manual transmission. Once I converted to the 32RH automatic transmission with everything else including the axle ratios being the same, I was able to go up the same obstacles for the first time without my winch. And when you're cruising, the magic of a lock-up torque converter puts all the power down to the wheels. We've had locking torque converters for what, 40+ years now?

Go to a rock crawling competition and you'll quickly discover that the vast majority of competitors are running automatics due, primarily, to the torque multiplication benefit. I just got back from the King of the Hammers desert race and rock crawling competition where I manned one of the check points and year after year, the vast majority of those vehicles are running automatics.

Which is why on one particular rock crawling course I run, that for the first time after converting my previous TJ from a manual to an automatic transmission, I was finally able to make it up the same three obstacles without the use of a winch. Same tire size, same 4.88 gearing, same obstacles. I needed a winch every year with the manual transmission, I never needed my winch again on those three obstacles after converting to the automatic. Why? Due entirely to the magic of the automatic's torque converter that provides 2-3X greater low-end torque. Which is a huge reason competitive rock crawlers like at King of the Hammers mostly run automatics.

GreenJack LOL - If you're worried about having to ride the clutch that's one thing but you will NOT get more torque to the ground with an automatic.

You have much more drivetrain lose with a slush box then an manual. That is just the way it is. A manual puts more power to the pavement.

However an automatic is easier....

2000mudwrangler its a 4 speed auto. like i said before i dont know what gear ratio is in it yet. i dont plan on staying with the 31's i plan to go 40's

doclouie What gearing do you have in your Jeep? Do you plan on staying with the 31s? Since it is a 2000 TJ you have the 3 speed auto.

2000mudwrangler Believe me I love driving manual. But even in the mud Ive noticed a significant difference in how I go through than my buddy, who has a manual. He just plows through. Where I can maneuver through.

netlohcs Mud, I am a total advocate of manual transmissions if for no other reason than I love driving them, its way more fun for me. If my goal was rock crawling though I can see some pretty obvious reasons why having an automatic would be significantly better.

Even if you didn't get the torque multiplication that Jerry is talking about, being able to more accurately control very slow tire speeds while still having the brakes applied is something that initially comes to mind.

2000mudwrangler i would have thought rock crawlers would be manual. my grandfather goes rock crawling all the time with a manual. but then again it does make sence to keep it auto because i wont have to worry about stalling out on a mountain side. thanks guys. ill look more into the gear ratio of the axels. any clue what a good gear ratio would be?

That it's going to be a rock crawler is a HUGE reason to keep the automatic. You'll get more low-end torque through the torque converter's multiplication factor and you'll be able to crawl the rocks much more effectively. That is why I converted my previous TJ's 5-speed to an automatic and why my present TJ is an automatic. Go to a serious rock crawling event and you'll find the vast majority of serious rock crawlers run automatics.

If your goal is rock crawling then keep it an auto. I swapped out my 5 speed for an auto because I hated the 5speed on the rocks. Find out what gear ratios you have. Getting the proper gears will make all the difference.

Right now i have 31's on it. I plan on doing a whole remodel on it once i get enough money saved up. Im not sure what gear ratio the axels are. Im guessing they are whatever comes stock in them. I plan on making it a rock crawler. thats why im trying to convert it.

Jerry Bransford I'm betting that Jeep is simply geared wrong because the automatic won't make it sluggish. What size tires are on it and what is the axle ratio? If anything, my '97 TJ was faster after I converted it from a 5-speed to an automatic several years ago.

freeskier If your looking for more "get up and go" then a transmission swap isn't the way to do it. Plus for mud I would not want a manual.

Wheelerbob Damn!!! Too bad your so far away, I have a 2000 wrangler with a 5 speed that I would like to swap to an auto. If you were local it could be a driveway weekend swap.

new jeep owner trying to transfer an automatic transmission to manual.

Im somewhat new to the jeep life. My grandfather owned a jeep but only went mountain climbing with it. At the moment i have a 2000 wrangler automatic. Im trying to transfer it to a 5-spd manual for a little more get up and go in the mud terrain. Does anyone know what i need as far as what king of tranny and essentials go. Any help is much obliged.
