1jeeplvr We'll do you want me to include everything, fenders, bumpers, winch, gears, lift tires etc etc etc? Or just to the point of the frame?

bostiguy If you don't mind telling, just for gits and shiggles, how much are you into your $1500 Jeep for now? $5K-ish??

Well I got a frame without any rust for If I remember correctly,600.00. A new one would prob be more than double that.Id do it the same way again if I had to.

Hinges rust on a lot of Jeeps. But, when you see rust on bumpers, on the hinges, on the tub, and on the rims, the thing likely looks bad on the underside.

Me? I would toss the rims and pick-up some new ones. You can buy very nice after-market rims for $400...probably sell the stockers as is for $100. Or, you can go through the effort of grinding, blasting, painting.....nothing wrong with that either. Would save your $300 and you only spend your time.

The rust on the mirror may be a problem because if you fold that mirror down, it could be a lot worse then it looks....then again, maybe not.

A lot of folks replace their hinges. Mine are all gun metal stainless except for the rear door, but I am going to replace that one too. Then, they never rust. IMO, painted hinges is just rust waiting to happen. The paint prevents them from, rusting....in therory, but sooner or later, water makes it's way into the hinge where there is no paint and blamo....rust.

On the positive side, you only paid $1500 for it. If the you just want something to knock around and enjoy, it will work as is unless that frame is as bad as you say, then it needs to be dealt with.

Once you are done doing the swap, you will also likely find other issues along the way. This will give you are great opportunity to either swap out, swap out and upgrade, or clean-up and keep. If you are really budget minded and come across say some badly rusted control arms, you could replaced all of them for about $700 with upgraded after-market ones, or put a post here asking for stock, clean control arms. Chances are someone might give them to you just for shipping costs.

Same goes for springs, shocks....etc.... People will give you stock parts, or nearly give you stock parts all day long. For example, you are welcome to my stock springs if you want them....that is if the ones you have are bad and two good, front shocks.

With a little work and some creativity (and the generosity of others) you could have this puppy looking new and it would be worth many times what you paid. More importantly, you will have the pride knowing that you did it.....anyone can get a loan, buy a new Jeep and drive it around like they own it. But, I have a LOT more respect for a guy like you who is willing to return this Jeep to it's former glory.

If you need anything, and I have it....it is YOURS. Any stock parts I have laying around are doing no one any good. They don't need to sit in my garage or in a landfill.

In fact, I would challenge anyone else her to help you with that too.
Thank you. You just motivated me to join this forum. I never see this kind of honest advice and generosity anywhere on the net.

I just bought a jeep off craiglist that was just too cheap to pass up. It's my first, so I don't know a lot about them. I am aware that the one I bought has some rot on the rear frame where it comes up over the axels on both sides. I am hoping that it can just be replaced but we will see.

Either way thanks man, I am now sure this is where I want to get my advice/help in the coming months.

$1500 is too cheap not to find a frame and fix/mod it.

Yeah,It was bad in a few spots. Also both sides of the rear where the bumper bolts.I feel it was too far gone.Seemed where I hit it with a hammer it punched a hole in it.It took mayby a month.with 2 people working on it.I cant believe the body bolts came right out.The rest of the Jeep is in really good shape surprisingly.
