Cold Starts

ok. Here in STL its 1 degrees outside. why when it gets cold. usually under freezing point is it difficult to shift into second. have to put some muscle behind it to get into second and once its in second it pops out but goes right back in. Like its freezing up. is this normal. 4 inch lift. 33s. 97 jeep wrangler.
