I too have come to that conclusion after talking with another seller yesterday. His Jeep was listed $2k more than blue book and refused to come down even half way. Ugh, I wish I had this money a couple months ago...

I live near Riverside (about 60 miles east of L.A.) I don't know if it's just me but Jeeps are like hot cakes right now! It may be the reason why prices seem so high.

Thank you very much for your input guys! I'm walking away from this one and moving on. I have since found a 91 YJ with 186k miles. Haven't seen it in person but I talked to the seller (auto broker so no history but has a clean title) It's a 6 cylinder, small lift, nice beefy off road tires, and the best part, everything works! I spoke with the other half about it and she seems to be on board. I will make an appointment to go see it and if everything checks out then it looks like it may be the one I get. Listed for $4800 but the guy said he'd go down to $4300. If I can get it for $4k should I go for it?

Aunt Flow what area of Cali do you live in? my budget was also 5k, after a few weeks I found one asking price 5k and we settled on $4500 Clean full functioning YJ's are out there. a little patience always pays. I wouldnt go for it, unless you really are looking forward to dumping $ time and effort immedietly into it.

Jurassic Wrangler I agree don't walk Run away from that one as a first jeep, I know for a fact Cali if jam packed with jeeps. I Lived in Vegas and regularly went into long beach area for work / rec and there is so many jeeps in south Cali it was cool.
Keep looking and READ as much as you can here, build threads fix it threads everything and you will be surprised how fast you will pick up tips tricks and helpful hints for looking at potential jeeps.

denisbaldwin there's plenty of other jeeps in your price range out there. Sounds like this one would be an uphill battle.

No problem..that's what this forum is for.....i only have one pic of my jeep on my profile, but it looks like that all over and i only gave 3 grand for it....no dents, dings, missing parts.....interior is real clean and EVERYTHING on the jeep works....even the old analog style clock keeps perfect time....i spent 150 to fix some minor rust on the frame and a few hundred (2or3) on stuff i just wanted to replace...i guess what i'm saying is that you can get a lot more bang for your buck than that jeep you're looking at....

jfbilbro this sounds like a turkey.....you can't take his word on the 4wd problems...no telling what that'll cost you to fix....then you gotta do the exhaust end to end......fuel guage could be the gauge itself OR the sending unit in the tank....turn signal switch is 70 bucks and you gotta tear the steering column down to replace it...and you're talking about 2200 for the jeep and then another 1500?...no way...you can buy a nice YJ for that, that is already road and inspection worthy....and then drop the other cash on mods....i'd pass if it were me and keep looking.....jus say'n

Looking for some advice

Hello All! So I'm in the market for a Jeep Wrangler. I haven't had very much experience with them but I know I want one (and have wanted one for a very long time). I've got the approval from the wife so it's a go. Now to just find one, and that's why I'm posting in this specific forum. Here goes:

I found a 1990 YJ 6 cylinder 5 speed manual transmission with 190k miles. Looks like it might have been lifted slightly but I'm not sure exactly.

Here is an image of it:


The tires are in good shape and there are some random spots on the body that have seen some better times. I test drove it for a bit today and I have some concerns about it. First and foremost, it's missing the front driveshaft. The guy says the transfer case is good but it's just missing the driveshaft. Both slipyolks are present. I'm not very familiar with the best way to get this fixed. I've done some searching online and here on these forums but I'm not sure how difficult/expensive/time consuming a job like this might be. There is also a pretty good (bad) exhaust leak and upon further inspecting it, looks like most of the joints welds are broken. My concern here is that I live in California and our crummy smog requirements wont let something like that pass and registration is due this month. The parking brake doesn't work but I'm pretty sure that isn't a big deal. It drives pretty well, and the front brakes work really well. The fuel gauge on the dash doesn't work either. Some electrical problems are present as well, most notably the turn signals but I'm not too concerned about that either.

I think I can pick this YJ up for $2K. He dropped it from the listed $4300 to $2200 immediately when I brought up the missing driveshaft issue. What do you guys/gals think? Should I go for it or spend the extra dough to get a more "turnkey" Wrangler? My budget is $5k max. If I can pick this up for 2K and drop $1500 or so into it, will that be enough to get this thing on the road as a daily commuter (30 miles round trip), with the occasional light off-roading? All of your help and advice is greatly appreciated! I am looking forward to tackling this project and joining the Jeep family finally.
