|Raif||A good way to tell is to have someone look at your front driveshaft while you are rolling. (make sure you are in 2wd) If it spins, it is likely this has been done to it.|

|Raif||If it is anything like my old cherokee (I'm not sure) Someone may have possibly completed the D30 posi conversion, and never removed the vacuum hose. But like I said, not too privy on the older YJ 4x4 systems.|

The indicator light switch can be in one of two places.
Older models have a vacuum actuated switch on the firewall next to the battery. One vacuum line and two wires.
Newer models have a switch on the cad actuator that is mechanically actuated by the cad shift-fork rod. Two wires on the drivers side (opposite the vacuum lines) in the cad housing on the passenger side front axle tube.

|JeepAddOns-Chris||If it goes off when in 4WD, the vacuum line going to the disconnect is on backwards.|

|dmcg||is it in 4wd when the light stays on?|

My guess would be that there is an external switch somewhere on the transfer case that has failed or is out of adjustment or the wiring hooked to it has a problem.
I'd get underneath and look around the transfer case especially by the shift linkage.
I might not even be on the right track, but that's where I'd start.
