uniballer I'm going to check out that Exogate, so thanks for bringing that to my attention.

More importantly, I've never really liked the look of the longer wheelbase LJs until I saw your hard top with the soft roll-ups in that other thread. You've ruined me Mr. Jeff. My TJ may never be that cool. For that, I will destroy you.

cjtheodo My contribution. Cost was Free. Took one hour to make out of wood. Reduces leverage and moment compared to carrying the fuel on the other side of the tire. The Rotopax is only 4 gallons but as long as you keep the width less that 4 inches, you could go bigger.

The best place for info on the Safari Cab hardtop is the Gr8Tops Facebook page (Gr8tops | Facebook). They've recently been posting photos of a new silver pre-production Safari Cab top which is running around the Detroit area:

shipjim Attachment 134269It looks like the smittybilt I Rack. I had one on my stock tire carrier, tore the door, changed over to a swing away carrier with cans by dirtworx.

jscherb Here's another design jerry can carrier I built to try out with the Exogate. I built this one to carry one can, but a two-can version could also be done.





I did a NY-Portland, Oregon and back trip with this one installed, it worked very well.

Yes, Gr8Tops licensed the Safari Cab design from me. They've been working on getting it into production.

My spare tire carrier failed with extended rubber snubbers that prevented the spare tire from flexing the bracket. I installed a second factory snubber over the top of each factory snubber, after cutting the curved portion off the top of the original snubber and to give it the proper height. It provided a very firm snug support for the spare tire which didn't wiggle/move around on the mount at all after increasing the height of the OE snubbers.

The OE spare tire bracket still cracked failed within 3-4 months of installing the bigger spare tire and simultaneously installed taller snubbers.

Yes, it is a stock carrier.

My experience has been that the combination of the Exogate completely eliminating tailgate flex, plus very tightly set snubber bumpers (especially the one on the body below the tailgate), eliminates the spare tire movement that can cause a "hammering" action over bumps that the spare carrier has to arrest, so the factory spare carrier isn't as stressed as it might be otherwise.

But if it develops cracks over time, I'll either reinforce it or build something stronger. I'll be monitoring it closely.

Jerry Bransford That sure looks like a stock non-reinforced spare tire bracket to me. My stock spare tire bracket cracked and failed just carrying a 33x12.50 spare tire on an aluminum wheel. And that was way less stressful than placing a full jerry can further away from the mount due to the enormous amount of added leverage such an arrangement creates.

Jerry,

I agree with you, I wouldn't put this extra weight or leverage on an unreinforced stock tailgate.

I'm running the Gr8Tops Exogate tailgate reinforcement/heavy duty hinges, so adding this extra weight and leverage to the tailgate is no problem. Because it's black on the black Jeep, it's a little hard to see in this photo, you can see the heavy-duty hinges in this photo but not the tailgate reinforcement:



One of the Exogate's design goals was to retain as much of the stock look of the Jeep as possible, it's not supposed to look like a hardware store hanging off the back of the Jeep, so it's pretty unobtrusive .

The Exogate has been well tested with the 225-lb. bouncing gorilla test (below), and it's been on this Jeep for about 10,000 miles, carrying a large spare, the Safari Cab barn door upper, and for 6000 or those miles, a jerry can as well.

Jerry Bransford I guess I'll have to be the one to give the caution statement. The added weight you've added that far away from the spare tire mount with the jerry can has added enormous leverage and moment against the mount and tailgate. A full jerry can is heavy enough as is without it also adding its weight for enormous leverage over the spare tire bracket and tail gate.

It looks cool but I sure wouldn't do it.

Jerry Can and Hi-Lift carriers

I've been working on a cargo system that attaches to the spare tire mount. The system starts with a mounting stud that goes through the hole in the spare:






So far I've made two different accessory mounts that work with the new design cargo system.

Here's a Hi-Lift mount:



The nuts holding the jack in place are 3/4", so the Jeep factory lug wrench fits them, making it easy to remove/install the jack.

And a Jerry Can mount (in this photo the Hi-Lift is on a roof rack mount):



Both of these mounts easily attach to the stud that comes through the center hole of the spare with one bolt, which is also 3/4".
