4fit Lets use 33" Duratracs as an example, and lets use Discount Tire Direct for our pricing:
15" package (that's what she said. )
33x12.5x15 Duratracs = $197ea
15" MB72s = $99ea
Non-TPMS valves = $3ea
Total for 5 mounted, balanced, and shipped = $1,495

17" package
285/70/17 Duratracs = $278.77ea
Total for 5 shipped, but not mounted or balanced of course = $1,393.85

So, then you have to take the newly acquired 17" tires to a shop and have them mounted and balanced. At my local Discount Tire, you are looking at an environmental fee of $5.14, tire disposal fee of $1.75, and installation and lifetime spin balancing fee of $16 for each of the 285/70/17 tires. So that is $114.45 (+ tax if applicable). So, you are looking at $1508.30 if you go with the 17" package.

But, what if you experience rubbing issues with the 285s on your stock wheels (6.25" backspacing) and decide that you need wheel spacers. Tack on another $200 for 1.5" Spidertrax spacers. Now you are at $1,708.30. $210+ more than the 15" wheel AND tire setup.

None of the setups above are taking into account any forum discounts, or mail in rebates or any of that stuff. But, you can subtract $125 from each of the totals really, since forum members get $50 off of 5 tires at DTD and you can get the $100 mail in rebate for select Goodyear tires (Duratracs are included) for joining treadlightly.org for $25.

For what it's worth, I recently purchased 5 16x8.5 Level 8 Strike 5s mounted on 285/75/16 Falken Rocky Mountains with full replacement certificates for $1,580 mounted, balanced, and shipped to my door.

InfernoGirl Difference being the load range... For a wrangler a c range is fine, for a Hummer, not so much.

Don't know which vendors you've talked to, and why they would guffaw. If it wasn't a truism, there wouldn't be half as many peeps on the forum running 15's as there are.

Try DTD, if you haven't yet. And ask about a specific rim/tire combo.

Such as this (this took less than 5 mins to look up online...I didn't bother to do rims. If you can't figure out that a 15" rim is gonna be cheaper than a 17" rim, well...):

Goodyear DuraTrac 285/70R17 ($278.99)
LT285/70R-17, Duratrac Tire by Goodyear

Goodyear DuraTrac 33x12.50R-15LT ($191.99)
33x12.50R-15LT, Duratrac Tire by Goodyear


These are essentially the same tire, in different sizes…very little difference btw the two: The 17 is .3” larger in diameter; both take rim size 8-10”; The 17 is load range D, the 15 load range C

Yet the price difference is $87/tire. With 5 tires, that's $435...almost a set of rims right there. Amazing, ain't it?

denisbaldwin That's pretty consistent. Smaller wheels are likely going to be cheaper both for the wheels themselves and for the tires. If you remember 10 years ago or so, a 15-16" wheel was common on most everything. Makes sense that it would be cheaper as there's simply more of them in that common size.

I've read dozens of threads in my quest for fatty wheels and I keep seeing going to 15-16" will result in a cheaper package (tires and rims) than buying just tires for a 17" stock rim. Where is this? Is this some secret I have yet to discover? Tires are not $60-$120 cheaper at R15 than R17 - or are they? Who do I need to talk to. I've called some vendors and they guffaw.
