|CJPete||Starting in '72 all AMC engines used the same bolt pattern, so anything after that should bolt up. For automatics that means your choices are the TH-400, the TF-999, or the TF-904. You could use other transmissions, but you might need adapters. Check out Novak-adapt.com, they've got a lot of good info about using other trannies.|

Are you sure of your current combo? It should be a T-14 3 speed and dana 20 t-case unless it was changed.
I would shoot for the t18, especially if it is the wide ratio (granny low 1st gear). The automatic trannies are longer and our short wheelbase rigs are limited in the tranny/tc combo due to the angle and length of the rear drive line.
The dana 20 is a good strong and compact case if that is in fact what you have. That should hold up fine to anything you throw at it. If you have the 300, that is even better-stronger but larger.

Swap from manual to Automatic
Hey i have a 1972 cj5 with a v8 and i am looking in converting it to a automatic.
There is currently a 3-spd T90 i think with a dana300 transfer case. I have a T18(4-spd) but havent had time to put it in yet.
If anyone can tell me what i should do or point me in a direction that would be great.
