DARKSLAYER56 Alright!!!!!!!!! Ol' Blackie is back where he belongs! It's been a long six months (having to drive a "normal" car) but, now all is right with the world. Thanks to all for the moral support during those troubled times.

bc3_Jeep I put well over 100K on my first AX5.... and I beat the PI$$ out of it....speed shifting and all the rest......Given the proper amount of respect.... it is as good as any other tranny.,....I have over 90K on the current one.....been a little more respectful of this one....

DARKSLAYER56 Alright! My "new" AX-5 arrived today and I'll have it back from the shop by Monday. As all you jeepers can attest to: having a broken down jeep is the pits. I couldn't be happier to be getting it back. Thanks to all on this thread.

You need

You need a 1996-1998 Dodge Dakota 4cyl bell housing and a different splined shaft for your transfer case.

WranglerJR83 I didn't even know you could put an ax15 behind a 4banger. Does anyone have any info on this. I would be interested. I just blew up my ax5 and I can find rebuilt and new ax15 trannys all day for half of an ax5

AX-5 unreliable?

I understand that the AX-5, just like the D-30 & D-35's, isn't manufactured to handle significant upgrades. But to say it's too weak and "should" be replaced with an AX-15 because it failed at nearly 300,000 miles???

To check reality, how many miles do you have on your basically unmodified YJ with the AX-5 and what is the transmission history?

I have 18 years, 1 total wreck at 16,000 miles, 83,500+ miles, never been serviced, and mine is holding up fine.

Yjpower94 Ok I didn't think to check on there. If mine went I would prolly just do a reman ax5. In the long run I wanna motor swap and do a legit soa. I have a reman in my jeep now and im at 155.

frankenstienjeep my question would be what kind of warranty on the new ax-5. i was moving my jeep from the front to the back yard to fit up my home made tire carrier and blew a hole in my ax 5 in reverse. they sell an ax 15 retro fit kit to 2.5 transmission and all for 1900.00 if i read it correctly. im opting to put the money toward a v-8 conversion . but deff would do the ax-15 conversion over replacing the ax-5 ...in the long run i think you would be happier with the results of a dependable tranny

JeepAddOns-Chris Reman is essentially the same. Internals are mostly new. Only thing that is kept is non-wear parts like the casing.

Reman, $650 sounds like a good price. The new price you got sounds like a good price. $650 is way too much for a used AX-5 though.

DARKSLAYER56 Yeah, I know the AX15 is better but, I don't do any serious 4 wheeling and my rig is pretty much stock. I also know the AX15 isn't a straight up bolt on replacement without at least an adapter kit and some minor modifications. Weak or not my last AX5 carried my Jeep to almost 300,000 miles so if it lasts another 22 years I think we'll be good. What I really want to know is if anyone agrees that a "New " price of $950.00 sounds more reasonable than the used and re-manufactured prices of around $650.00.

Jeep Conversions We Don't Do - Novak Conversions

IMHO this would be a perfect opportunity to convert to an AX-15, which even if used would be bulletproof behind a 2.5.

Brand new AX5

Later this week I'm buying and having installed a "Brand New AX5". The cost for the tranny minus core charge is $950.00. I'm cool with the cost so long as it is new and not re-manufactured. I couldn't seem to get a better price than about $650.00 for a used or remanned. Anybody see any problems with my plan? I hope not because, I'm super stoked to be getting the ol' YJ back. I'm thinking $950.00 is well worth it for "New".
