nastyoldf On the intake manifold, just under the carb mounting surface, you should see a vacuum port that's about the same size as the vacuum port on the HEI distributor. Since I'm not familiar with your carb, that's where I would plug in. Set the timing at 8 or 9 degrees advanced without the vacuum hooked up to the distributor and then connect it up after you get the setting you want. I use a white paint marker to mark the timing mark before trying to set it. Makes the job a lot easier when you can see that stupid mark, to start with, when the engine is running.

You are right it should have ported-vac to the HEI

riceroni87 ah ok. thanks for the info i was kinda lost when i was reading about it. just got my jeep a week ago and trying to figure it out.

scott howard if you have a hei distributor you do not need to nutter. the hei does the same thing and is better.

take pics and tell us how the HEI was wired and we will try and help with the clicking and dieing problem .
almost sounds like the timing light is grounding the HEI out

I've been looking to see if has been done to my 1990 yj 4.2l. It has an HEI distributor and a weber carb. I can tell if its been nuttered or not since nothing is plugged to the distributor. and what is spliced with the purple and orange wire goes to the ecm and is spliced to a red and white wire. nothing to the purple and orange wire. I'm a bit confused. its running right now. i tried plugging the tach in to the HEI and clicking sound would come from the HEI when plugged in and would also engine would attempt to die when plugged.
ill take pics in a bit.
