Jerry Bransford Just a quick update...

I and about a dozen local friends went to Congressman Duncan Hunter's Off-Road Town Hall meeting shortly after the big push for petition signers ended... though signatures are still encouraged for future needs.

Several of us, me included, were speakers at the meeting and we voiced our concerns about the possible loss of Johnson Valley OHV to Congressman Hunter as well as California BLM Director Mike Pool. Hunter was very supportive, Pool was too but not as much as Hunter... it was easy to know who was elected vs. who was appointed. There were 4-5 others on their panel too including an obviously left-leaning BLM biologist.

Before it was my turn to speak, someone in my group had the bright idea to suggest that during my part, I invite Congressman Hunter to go on a ride-along with us to do a trail or two in JV. He and his aides accepted, though after the meeting Hunter told me that he may have to send his son Duncan Hunter in his place for the ride-along. His son is a Marine Corps Captain and will be running for his dad's office for the next term so we thought that was great.

Congressman Hunter also asked us for photos and maps of the trails we are talking about so we are just now finishing up an album to be delivered to his office within the next few days.

We don't have the date nailed down for the ride-along yet but I suggested it take place before the end of April, for rising heat condition reasons.

Congressman Hunter is meeting with General Conway, Marine Corps Commandant, next month and we believe he will be showing the General our album and descriptions of the area we are concerned about. The problem is the area the Marines are looking at possibly annexing is the precise location of the vast majority of trails... The Hammers... that is our greatest concern.

The Marines have not yet decided to annex JV OHV, but at this point don't even have a clue about why the area they are interested in is so vital to us.

I'll keep you posted, thanks to everyone for your support and signatures.

Yes, its was necessary. I do not feel bad removing one of their options.

Triple88a Well if its for off road driving training instead of shooting training or whatever, i wouldn't mind going around their humvees and just sharing the trail

Believe me when I say that all of us are very much in favor of having our soldiers be as prepared as possible for any conflict we need to be involved in. But in this case there are other places where they could potentially train that would have no affect on the current use of the land.

soupy1957 I have to speak honestly here....

I understand the "open space" is something to cherish, for all kinds of outdoor activities for Wranglers, as well as hikers.
I further understand that as time goes on, "space" is more of a premium for all.
If I knew more about the reasons behind the military's desire to use this land, I'd be a better-informed citizen, and could make a "right" decision than just a knee-jerk "ok I'll go along" vote.

I don't wish to be difficult here, or cause any angst; just want to be more informed.
In a day where our military need all the help they can get, I'd like to know more about the need first.

Triple88a eh, the military with their crappy hummers.. why not build on a mall parking lot instead? It wil sure make their driving a lot easier

1BLKJP Trip,

There is no goal per say to save the area. As a matter of fact there is nothing concrete yet that the actual area will be down sized. It is a preliminary situation that is being worked thru by the military to expand their base out there. If we got 50k on the petition that would be smokin. If we got 100k it would be twice as good. The petition was started by the members of the OHV community that had a meeting with Rep. Duncan Hunter out in Ca. last week. They wanted to show how much support the JV OHV area has by both the CA wheelers and the rest of the country. From my understanding there were some very positive comments that came from Mr. Hunter and his son in regards to keeping that area open.

Im kind of a pessimist, cynical or whatever (lol in case you hadnt noticed)
Thats why I never used to vote when I could vote. I was always of the mindset of "my single vote isnt going to make a difference so why bother"

Then you get "what if everyone said that thered be no votes"

But then I know everyone wont say that.

Then you get "what about how close it was in Florida that time"

Well it wasnt decided by one vote.

then you get "if you dont vote you got no right to complain"

etc etc

This mindset annoys most people I understand that, but anyway, if YOU believe in something and need votes or signatures, for your sake I got no problem doing it.
