The above mentioned lab test always infuriates the K&N believers, I know. The tests were performed in lab conditions using ISO lab standards. That lab test was far more precise than can be accomplished on the road with whatever happens to be blowing around in the area.
What convinced me of the tests validity was that prior to me even seeing the lab report which is quite long, I had already removed my K&N because I noticed how much grime was getting past it. I ended up adding one pre-filter, then one more to stop the grime that was collecting inside the intake tube and throttle body. The amount of grime that had collected behind the K&N was amazing.
Thr below pic shows my old K&N air filter with the two pre-filters I added pulled back so they can be seen. The inner pre-filter was an Outerwears. The outer pre-filter, when the Outerwears proved to be not quite enough, was an oiled foam Unifilter.
Yes I had been anal about keeping it serviced per K&N's instructions and cleaning/oiling products when I discovered all the grime that had built up inside the air intake and throttle body. No more grime at all since I got rid of the K&N and went back to a paper A-C Delco air filter.
Trust me, I wouldn't have bothered adding TWO pre-filters on top of the K&N if it weren't for the amount of grime I discovered had been getting past the well-serviced K&N. I'll never run another K&N thank you.

What were the test conditions? How are they different than off road driving or on road driving? Have they tested filters under normal driving conditions?
Does this mean the ac delco blocks more dust but chokes the air flow?
I put a K&N in the stock air box with no expectation of performance gains. I did it primarily so I could clean and re-use. I noticed a lower exhaust note and it handles "the cut in the hill" and my steep driveway with much less effort. The cut in the hill is a steep grade on I-75 from Kentucky down to cross the Ohio River into downtown Cincinnati.

You may be interested in the below part of results from an ISO lab test of air filters then.
The below text was copied verbatim from the test results... their words, not mine.
"In the chart above it’s important to note the different test durations for each filter. The AC Delco filter test ran for 60 minutes before exceeding the restriction limit while the AMSOIL and K&N tests each ran for 20 and 24 minutes respectively before reaching max restriction. In 60 minutes the AC Filter accumulated 574gms of dirt and passed only 0.4gms. After only 24 minutes the K&N had accumulated 221gms of dirt but passed 7.0gms. Compared to the AC, the K&N “plugged up” nearly 3 times faster, passed 18 times more dirt and captured 37% less dirt."
Few people understand just what a poor air filter a K&N really is.

|nightop||I put the K&N Cold Air Intake and a Flowmaster exhaust on my '06 upon purchasing it, as this is one of the standard "first thing to do" for many people, and I've had no problems with it. I like how it looks in the engine bay and I like not having to ever replace filters. I have no doubt that a paper/factory filter would work better at blocking fine dust and particulate, but I rarely drive in dusty conditions and therefore don't care.|

|Jerry Bransford||The very last air filter I would use in any of my engines is a K&N. K&N air filters let fine dust, silicates, etc. through like a screen door lets dust through from a Texas dust storm. A K&N is probably the very worst air filter for actually filtering dirt out of any of the common brands of air filters.|

|jerryj||I have a Banks and I went from 31's to 33's at the same time I put it on so I didnt notice any difference.Some say you cant get any more air through there so Its a waste of money If I had to do again I would probably just do a filter and spend the extra $$ else where maybe the Bacon of the month club or some thing mmmmmm bacon !!!|

If your wondering about power increase, to put it simply.... no.
As far as the sucking water part it makes a lot of sence and is a sound theory. However, my jeep came with a cold air intake and ive been wheeling it for a year now. Ive plowed into puddles at high speeds (not recommended), crossed creeks and have nosed into water higher than my hood and never once stalled, ran rough or got any sort of vapor lock. And yet people ive gone with went through the same stuff with stock air boxes and ended up pulling over to dry out there filters
Im not saying an cold air intake is better, just sharing my expierence with it.

K&N Cold Air Intake Kit? Is it worth it?
Hey everyone! I have a 2006 4.0 TJ and am thinking about adding on a K&N cold air intake kit. Has anyone done this? I have been told it would suck water if I ever got into a creek crossing situation. Is it worth it for the kit or should I just buy the K&N filter and put it in the stock air box? Let me know and keep it upright!!!!!!
