Ok, I changed my mind completely and fell in love with this one! It's totally stock, yes but that means and I can start from the beginning and customize it how I want to. My first Jeep! Yay!

I agree with everyone else, I would shoot for the 4.0
Another thing to consider.. Hard top vs soft top, hard tops and hard doors are a LOT more expensive if you want them later on down the road. Half doors and soft tops are easy to come by for pretty cheap.

|sawyert||For the highways, i would go with the 4.0L. I have a 2001 4.0L 6 cyl and i still have somewhat of a trouble keeping up on the highways specially if its a hill. Mind that i keep my revs below 2.5k. But if there isn't many hills i can keep her at 65-80 easily. My jeeps all stock except the wheels and tires with 3.07 gearing and i rev at 2.1k going 80mph. Gas mileage... Its a JEEP. I would crawl under the jeep and look for scratches/dents to see how much offroading it took. Also look for leaking compenents. Jeep being that old will tend to start leaking and need replacements. Such as simple oil leaks (valve cover gasket) or the steering stabilizer, etc. And do the basics of car buying, check oil, air filter, etc. See if the PO did the proper maintenance. Sorry if theres bad grammer or spelling. I'm suppose to be paying attention in class but instead im on here haha!|

|Bone||I'd stay away from the 4cyl on account of the automatic. Gas mileage on a Jeep should never be a selling point since they have the aerodynamics of a brick. You'd probably be happier with that 4.0 in the long run but make sure to give it a good inspection before buying it so you aren't paying for someone else's trail damage.|

|kshaws21||Well I have the 4cyl and it sucks on open highway, but is just as capable as a similarly equipped 6cyl offroad. It does have an advantage on gas mileage even though some will argue that point. I can get 18-20 in a tank with normal driving keeping it under 65. My last tankful was used with about 30% of it spent in four wheel low and I got 16.7 mpg. I have the five speed and would not recommend the four cyl with an automatic, have heard they are much weaker....|

|eagle223||I would personally shoot for the 4.0L with full doors and a hard top. Mainly because you may end up wanting the power later, and if you want a hard top and full doors you won't have to search around on Craigslist or pay like $2000 or so for the one that quadratec sells. I don't imagine much of a difference in gas mileage between the two either, considering you are driving a car that wasn't designed to e aerodynamic.|

Hello Jeepers! I am brand new to this forum and this is my first time posting. I need some opinions! I am about to buy my first Jeep and I am so excited and can't wait! I know it's definitely what I want....However, I thought I made up my mind which one I wanted but now I am torn and reconsidering some things....I found a 2003 SE (TJ) that only has 44k miles! It is beautiful! It has a soft top and half doors....here's the thing, it is a 2.4L 4cyl (automatic). I also found one that I like that is a 4.0 I6 and it's a 2001 with full doors and hard top with a few more options and about 120k miles. I do a lot of driving and whatever I get will be my daily driver. I don't know which way is the better way to go and I want some input on the 4cyl vs. the 4.0 6cyl....whether they are more fuel efficient, if they are ok on the highway, etc. Any and all opinions are welcome and appreciated (please be kind)!
