Jerry Bransford I dunno, there are still a lot of MT/Rs running those trails in JV, mine came through my last run through there without a problem.

1BLKJP I thought both the Blue Label and Red Label Krawlers are bias?

And as far as radials go I'll give the nod to Claws anyday. About six months ago 2 of our guys were still running MT/R's of the 37" variety on 17" rims and between the 2 of them they cut 5 tires on 2 trails that day. They were the last two in our group that ran them. One went to Creepies and the other to sticky comp claws. I know that several years back the MT/R was unparralled in the rock world. Don't know if they've weakened the materials over the years or other tires have just surpassed them in quality. Don't get me wrong for the regular everyday user who drives their junk to work and hits the occasional 3-4 rated trails on the weekends I think MT/R's are still right up there with the best of them. But for the rocks from JV and AZ, nope not anymore.

Jerry Bransford The Krawler is certainly the radial rock crawling tire to beat but the MT/R still has very tough sidewalls and it was the toughest radial rock tire until the Krawler came out. In fact, it was because of the BFG MT's cut-prone sidewalls that were becoming too big of a problem in the exploding sport of rock crawling that the MT/R was introduced by Goodyear. It immediately took over, it was head and shoulders above the BFG MT which quickly pretty much disappeared in areas like Johnson Valley and other areas where sharp rocks present.

The MT/R was the top radial rock crawling tire until BFG fought back with their new Krawler. I've only cut one MT/R sidewall out of two sets and it looked exactly like the above photo, but one cut sidewall out of eight MT/Rs is pretty good and far better than when I used to run BFG MTs on easier trails. You're literally the first wheeler I've ever met who thought the MT/R wasn't superb on the rocks, it's a close second only to the Krawler IMHO so far as radial tires go.

Nope certainly not yankin your chain Jerry. The KA Krawler yes very tough sidewalls. The MT/R? Nope, weak sidewalls and pretty much getting to be as bad as the BFG MT.




This is from an MT/R this past weekend. Everyone we wheel with has been sytematically moving away from the MT/R for this specific reason. These aren't mine, I run Claws.

Tire plugs? What, you Arizona wheelers burn pallets at night so your trails are littered with nails?

For all purpose yeah they are a great tire. But for the rocks we have here in AZ we have nicknamed them More Tireplugs Required.

Just realize that you'll need to regear to a lower ratio or those 35" tires will just kill your performance. You'll also need a beefier steering setup like Currie's to withstand the greater stress your tie rod and drag link will experience with such a big tire.

A set of smaller tires and big lift will give you articulation like you would not believe instead of fitting the biggest tires you can get under the wheel wells. A 4 inch lift on ours with 32's was positively impressive with what it could climb over.

I am going crazy trying to pick which tires to put on my new jeep. I am getting a currie 4in johny joint lift w/ .75in spacers. I need some help on picking tires i want to run 35x12.50x16s. I only do mud if its in my way. I do alot more rocks and trails than mud.
