That's pretty funny, I didn't really look at the date. I was looking up threads that had 2 doors with kids. Since I was close to trading my 2 door for one with 4, glad I haven't.

Similar Scenario

I was recently in a similar situation. Being in the market for a new car, the 2-door wrangler was at the top of my list. My wife wanted 4-door for the convenience factor. I like the way the 2-door looks much more than the 4-door.

So had her go for a test drive in another car I was considering - the Subaru BRZ. Put the car seat in the back with my daughter in it. Once she looked in the back she said "I don't care if you get the 2-door Wrangler as long as you don't get the BRZ!" Needless to say, the BRZ has almost no leg room at all. It makes the 2-door wrangler look like a stretch limo. And yesterday I put my order in for a 2-Door 2013 10th Anniversary Rubicon!

Paulie I had two YJs back in the day that I loved and was looking at getting a TJ. But I now have two kids, 2 and 6, and I thought about all the stuff I would need to do with them. Pickups and dropoffs and school, getting them in and out, and hauling all the kid stuff. 2 door would work, but for me, I could see there would be a lot of stuff I wouldn't be happy with. Plus I couldn't find the right TJ so that pushed me toward a JK anyway.

So I picked up a 2010 4 door. I love it, wife loves it, kids love it. Everybody's happy. My older daughter can get in and out without my wife having to get out. I can easily get my younger daughter in and out. There's a ton of room so I can pile kid stuff in the back by the shovel-full. I have an 05 GC so the Wrangler was supposed to be the 2nd/weekend car but I realized I still need the family-size convenience. Plus I'm pretty sure the JKU has more room than the GC.

Give some thought to how you'll be using it every day with your family and I think that will give you your answer. I think you'll end up with a 4 door.

McClary85 Just let your wife drive it once, she will be hooked! You just have to make sure the sun is out and the top is down!

Drock1979 Do you want a jeep or a hummer? Jeep= 2 door hummer=4 door. Lol. They made the 4 door to be more family friendly for a reason, my 13 year old says he wishes I got the 4 door, I told him if they made a 4 door tj I would have considered it then gotten the two door anyway.

WARNING I AM NOT ARGUING-----JUST ANOTHER VIEW!!!

I have an '04 TJ that I took to a Jeep off road event, last OCT. With my over 6'2" 240# + son-in-law and my daughter. Will post pics of them @ their wedding.....anyway. SO they were pretty cramped in the TJ. But loved it want to go next year.

Purchased a '12 back in DEC, took them out for a ride in the JK here a few weeks back and they commented on how much more room and comfortable it was. Not saying it is like riding in a full size truck but I feel for me that it is usable.....for adults on a somewhat limited basis. With kids, IMO shouldn't be an issue.

I have been in the back of the JK, as well and it "isn't bad", my SO has no problem back there either.

I am repeating, but for kids/ children I feel it would be acceptable.

Just my .02

That would definitely make it more manageable. Hopefully it's still like that in 2022 when I get my next one...

Plus, the back seat on the 2 door is more like a shelf. Even with small children it would be cramped back there. I know a few people that have taken the rear seat out of the 2 door because it's practically unusable.

hedley-lamarr08 i don't think its a flame fest... its opinion.. thats what the thread starter wanted.. I have many similar questions... I guess I shouldn't grudge the extra $2500 or so and just get a 4 door... Lifted I think they look better... (thats where the nag that sleeps with me comes in) I'm sure she would throw a fit.. but a 4 door with a 2 inch lift and 33's... I think it looks as good as anything on the road... With after market bumpers and rock sliders... it should be plenty safe...

IMHO, it's a big and noticeable difference. When I was shopping, I originally wanted the two door. My best friend had one, and I LOVED the "Jeep" of it, so I was dying for one ever since. My first test drive was a 2 door Sahara with hardtop. Took it to some bumpy pothole filled roads and wasn't too happy. I knew I couldn't swallow that pill. I knew that I would regret it, daily driving it. It is very bouncy over uneven pavement (short wheelbase and being 4 miles in the sky) and twitchy on the handling front. I came back to the dealer disappointed. I then took a 4 door out, and couldn't believe how much better, more stable, and more sure footed the truck was. It was a no brainer for me. The two door constantly gave me the "I'm about to roll over" feeling, while the 4 door handled everything I threw at it with ease. Remember, I have been driving almost nothing but sports cars for the last decade, so I am pretty sensitive to handling and car dynamics. Now, before anyone burns me at the stake, no, I didn't try and drive the Jeep like I drove my M3 or s2000. I drove it like I would drive a normal daily driver, with some emergency (NYC remember) reactionary maneuvers. Cars switching lanes without looking, popping out of corners at stop signs, unexpected turns on a dark road, etc. To me, the Unlimited does everything better than the 2 door (dynamics wise) due to simple physics. Yes, it's a tad heavier, so it is a bit slower, but the room, the sure footedness, the ride quality, and the offroad advantage made it a no brainer for me.

I don't want to turn this into a 4 door vs 2 door flamefest, the above are nothing more than my personal opinions, and a few cents.

Panther57 I've never owned a 4dr ... I've owned a '97, '04 and now have a 2012 -- all 2dr jeeps. I also own a F250 so if I need to haul cargo I'm covered. The 2012 is my daily driver, and I love everything about it. Can't wait for this Michigan weather to warm up so I can get the top off.

AZ here, but the ride (as well as the looks with the four door off) is what moved me over to the JKU camp. But yea, I currently drive about 40 minutes to work each way and won't mind the better ride.

Recommend the four door.

I figure to hopefully have this Jeep for around 10 years. At that point, I will switch to a 2 door.

I also agree that adding rock rails will give you more safety for side impact. I have Ace Rails and they're solid! I do feel safer on the road with them.

JKatfish Which Jeep brings out your passion when you look at it and make you want to go out and drive it? The 2 dr or 4 dr? Many told me to get the 4 dr for the space, but I didnt feel it was me, plus I wound up with the auto after drivng the manual which I thot would be more fun, but was more work instead, esp around town.

JKatfish Go for the fun to drive factor and you'll get the 2 dr. Going for room and space?, get the 4 dr. The latter is nice, but a roof rack or hitch rack takes care of that. Since you have another vehicle, get the 2 dr! I think your daughter may enjoy riding in the 2 dr more than the 4 dr, imo...cool factor lol....And the small turning radius is like a sports car!

I C I used to think the 10 yr old enjoyed the 2 door and the 8 yr old too. They did . A lot. It's fun climbing in the back and over the wheels in the top-off times.

But only because they didn't know how much more they would enjoy the independence of actually opening their own doors, having space in the back to actually put stuff - kid stuff like baseball bags, bikes, tree limbs for school projects, the dog etc.

Go four door.
03-02-2012 08:46 PM
cosmos I think putting some beefy rock rails on the side would give the other cars crumple zones something extra to do and make a JK fair much better in a side impact.
03-02-2012 06:53 PM
hedley-lamarr08 I would trust a jeep... don't own one yet, but i'm planning hard on it... safety has nothing to do with my decision for this purchase... i am stuck for 2/4 door... just for personal space.... not safety... i just can't decide if i want to fork out the cash now for a Rubicon or just add on to a sport as i go....

This. ^

Based on my TJ experiences, Wranglers aren't the best choices for daily drivers. And I was essentially single when I owned them.

Now that I have no more real need for a half-ton pickup, it's Wrangler time again.
