Need advice on bracket mounts for lights

I have several Dually mounts for driving lights to put on the outside pillar by the windshield.
I want to put some sort of thin gasket between the mount and the vehicle to protect the paint.
My first thought was cut up an old tire - but there must be something better.
Suggestions and maybe a source please?
