The first thing I bought for my jeep was tires and a BB lift because the rubber that was on it was toasted. Even though they are only 31x10.50s, they gave it a more badass look and was definitely worth IMO.
I think you should find a friend and then drop a few bucks on a recovery strap (2") and just go do what that jeep was really meant to be doing!
In my situation, i only found one guy that I wheel with so my next investment is a new front bumper and a winch, cause i've got some lame tube bumpers the previous owner installed...

|Gate53||As a novice your Jeep has more capability than you do right now. A rock can reach up and put a hole in your oil pan weather you are 10" clearance or 15" that will ruin your day guaranteed. Never go alone, get some hooks front and back so you can be pulled out. As an investment under armor is good and you will use it no matter what type of offroading you end up doing the most of (oil pan skid, gas tank skid, tranny skid, steering box skid...etc). Recovery gear, a good 30 foot strap (no metal hooks), maybe a tree saver strap. You don't have to run out and buy it all at once, get with a local club and go a few times you will learn what you need. I have seen newb's lifted,locked, huge tires, and rolled and trashed because the Jeep could do things the driver couldn't get out of. Be safe and enjoy it while it's cheap and the little things your Jeep can do still thrill you to death it won't be long before you'll want the expensive things to keep up the thrill.|

Cheapest upgrades to get you started would be a body lift and larger tires. The larger tires would increase your ground clearance at the differentials and the body lift will give you more clearance for the bigger tires. Once you get hooked, the list will grow.

Skid plates, recovery points, and upgrade your tie rod with something like the ZJ V8 upgrade (ZJ Tie Rod Conversion).
Then, find a local club and hit the trails while you're still stock. You'll quickly find out what needs upgrading, and in the meantime you can figure out exactly what you want to do with your Jeep and start researching appropriately.

Common sense isn't so common now days is it? It you see a cliff or 8 ft boulders with stock jeep r u gonna try to conquer it? Not exactly! Nor would i try to run off a cliff! "INVEST IN PARTS"! You gain experience,knowledge, and "common sense" by off roading I would hope!! Lol

^^ Listen to these guys. A stock Jeep will go places few other off-road vehicles can handle. Better to learn the ins and outs of wheeling, and spend your $$ based on knowledge, than to blindly buy a bunch of stuff you don't fully know how to use.

I run a mostly stock rig (for now...) with 30x9.5 a/t's and can still keep up with the more built rigs in most cases. On my wish list are a lift and larger tires, then all the other fun stuff that goes along.

If your tires are up to the task then in my opinion it comes down to a winch or a locker.
A winch will get you out of all those places that you manage to get yourself into.
The locker will help get you into those places.
So I guess both.

|Lithium Lotus||Good off-road tires. If you are currently running street tires, a set of mud terrain tires will do wonders for you in the dirt.|

New to off roading
So I went off roading for the first time and I'm now hooked but have only a set of decent off road tires. What would be the first/most essential thing to buy as a beginner to off roading? My buddy who is really into dirt bikes and knows a lot about it said to get a 4 point harness but idk how much he knows about off roading in a vehicle. Just wanted to know what your opinion is?
