|shoepick||You could also have a trany flush done at a good shop and it would remove all the water, even from the converter.|

|shoepick||If it had a considerable amout of water in it its gona take several fluid and filter changes to get it all out because when you drain the fluid it dosent drain the torque converter therefore you arent getting all the water out. Just cause you dont have trany fluid in your radiator dosent mean that its not leaking and getting water in the trany. Technically the trany lines run more pressure than the radiator but its a JEEP strange things happen. Also check your trany vent line and make sure its not broken or missing, mine comes up the fire wall and fastens behind the valve cover.|

Could it be as simple as you took on water in the transmission through the tranny fill hole? You said it was always exposed (no dipstick).
I've had my diffys get contaminated with water. Sometimes it doesn't go away with the first refill/flush.

TF999 Milky Trans Fluid / Coolant?
I'm the proud new owner of a 1993 YJ wrangler (After owning an XJ and ZJ). 4.0, TF999 auto 3spd.
I drove it home with a transmission leak and immediately dropped the pan. The fluid was a milky pink, indicating that its contaminated with water. No greenish hue.
Changed the fluid, refilled, and on my way. Planned to drop it again this week and replace again, and once more soon down the road.
I was missing the dip stick, which I picked up today. Went to check the fluid level, and found that the fluid is still a very white pinkish color. I know that the pan only has half the fluid or so, and that I can should expect contamination, but there is very little if any change in the color since the first swap.
My next step is to think that I'm getting my water contamination from the tranmission cooler in the radiator. There is no visible oil in the coolant (at least, that I can see by pulling the radiator cap).
