Jerry Bransford Exactly how is the pinion angle set... or at least what was your goal when you were adjusting its angle via the cam bolts? Most of the time, especially with a TJ, you will have vibes with a 3.5" lift if you only drop the t-case an inch, no matter what you try to set the rear pinion angle to.

I'm now even more convinced you have an angle problem that MAY be reduced enough to get rid of the vibes if you add a pair of 1" taller motor mounts. The 1" taller motor mounts add to the effect done by the 1" t-case drop.

But again, what pinion angle were you shooting for when you were adjusting the cam bolts? Were you trying to get the pinion angle parallel to the t-case output shaft?

USBrit Firstly: thank you all for your replies; I have been looking for a source for good advice since I bought my TJ in 2006 and it looks like I have found it.
It looks like I need to look around for another business to change my gears; trouble is there are not many to be found around here and I am loathe to part with my Jeep for any extended amount of time unless I have to (say our trip back to the UK this Christmas).
With regard to the driveline angles; with the transfer case drop kit and the axel angle adjuster offset cam bolts, I managed to keep the rear axel pretty much the same as before I installed the lift; perhaps a degree off.
I am not discounting any of your comments and I will be looking into all the ideas. I have yet to find a local business that I can trust and work with on my Jeep.
In the meantime I will rely on the members of this forum. Thanks again.

Exactly.

For the size lift you have, you should be running an SYE setup. Even with a transfer-case drop, the angle still isn't reduced enough.

Jerry Bransford Installing a "better" clutch (none available to do what you're thinking anyway, especially not Centerforce) isn't the answer, regearing is. Whoever quoted you $1800 to regear must have been smoking somthing. I've regeared twice with the first one costing around $1200 and the last one costing just under $1100.

And the shudder you feel may be nothing more than a vibration caused by a grossly bad drivetrain (u-joint) angle caused by the new suspension lift. What was done to correct for the excessively steep u-joint angles created by your new suspension lift? What was done to the rear pinion angle?

distortedtj Gears to fix your problem. And i would look to get them done somewhere else $1800 is basically double what it should cost for the gears and install.

trailguide I don't think that is advisable. You still will be straining all the components and still not have high gear. With all the discussion about proper gearing I'm sorry you didn't see that gearing, esp a 3.07, is really necessary with larger tires. I vote save your money up for the gears.

Clutch Upgrade

I have a 2006 Wrangler that I fitted with a 3.5" suspension lift and 33X12.5 Baja Claws on 15X10MT-Classic II's. My problem now is that unless I find $1800 to have the diff gears changed I have to put up with the transmission juddering when I pull away in first gear; also with my current 3.07 ratios, sixth gear is rarely used. It has been suggested that it would be less expensive to fit a high pressure cluch plate and performance clutch(just to stop the juddering). I have been reading about Centerforce II clutches and I reckon that for about $5-600 I can have my stock clutch replaced. I am interested in comments and/or advice on this upgrade to my Jeep.
