Another opinion (that's the thng about Forums lots off opinions).
A lot of what has been said makes sense. Cheap lift, no lift, drive it when it breaks, than start lifting etc.
Your Jeep is very good out of the box. A more aggressive tire will always help, but you will pay for it on the road noise and gas. and I mean the same size as stock..just different tread pattern.
IF you find you truly NEED the 33's, than I would suggest a full HIGH QUALITY suspension lift. OME or someone along those lines. You will gain 2-3 which will "allow" 33's with the correct rims/ BS. But to truly WHEEL it also add a 1"- 1.25" BL.
Yes your gas mileage will suffer after these mods, but if you "know your Jeep" from having driven it BEFORE all the Mods, you will probably be able to "out wheel" a lot of other people.
Your Dana 35 (probably) won't last long with 33's. SO there is an added cost as well. It may be fine but it wasn't really designed for that big of a tire and wheel.
One thing to keep in mind do it right the first time and will probably cost less and be more satisfying in the long run.
If I was going to MOD it at all, if I were you I would purchase a winch. To help you get out of trouble if needed.

|rda616||Do a 1.25" savvy body lift, but no higher. This will make room for future mods like a tummy tuck and skids. It will only cost you a couple hundred bucks and can be done with hand tools in your drive way in an afternoon.|

|Mariah94||I say only lift it if you're going to use it off road. At 17 I got my first vehicle, my jeep, and I'm 17 now and really can't speak because mine is lifted...but I get horrible gas milage, am fighting a death wobble, and have no cash to fix the important pieces of my jeep like my steering stabilizer, turn sig. 02 sensor, window! Yes I have no window...and IMO my jeep would look a lot better with some KC lights and new fenders! Wish I had invested in lights and body beauty instead of the lift first. Love what I have, but I'm paying for it right now. And I'm a full time student in college...this is my daily driver and all of my income goes to gas at the moment. 3.69 a gallon is not precious.|

|Gate53||Leave it stock. From what I read it knows more about offroad (and in a 16yo's case onroad) than you do. Don't move the center of gravity up until you catch up with it.|

I agree with 20ga & turnstyle.
If you dont NEED to lift it, dont lift it.
The higher you lift, the more you'll spend on lift, tires, and GAS.
Yep, your mileage will suffer too.

At 16 I would say just be stoked to have a jeep. Take it where it takes you & focus on keeping it running right and driving straight.

But they are cheap and will ride cheaply. The better ones are Old Man Emu and Bilstein. Also look at Rancho RS9000's with the 9 position switches. Though these are around 80+ each.

|TheTJRod||BTW, the teraflex lift is really only a 1.5" spacer. Also with the proper bumpstops you won't need new shocks but you will get more articulation and a better ride with them.|

BTW just telling us if it is the 4cylinder or 6 and auto or manual we can tell you what tranny you got. What model is it, SE, Sport, other?
Trying to find the cheapest stuff for you to lift the Jeep. Look on craigslist for cheap used lift kits and tires. Though always try to replace as many bushings as you can on used stuff before you install it and find out their bad.

As you will quickly find out. Putting on a 3"+ lift and the tires to fit takes a lot more than just buying the lift kit. SYE, driveshaft, adjustable control arms, steering upgrade, brake upgrade. These are not "required" so you can take the cheap way out and keep everything else relativity stock and use the t-case drop mounts. But I hope you will look at keeping your Jeep reliable as you want to keep it throughout high school. It's not to say people have not done this and been just fine. Every Jeep is different and something that works for one might not work the same for another.
I suggest a 2" budget boost and 31-32" tires on new wheels with less backspacing. Then get a front bumper. That should give the old Jeep a real nice look that will still be real driveable. If you really want 33's then add a 1.25" body lift. This will let you clear 33's but you will start to really feel the loss of power in the jeep with stock gearing in the axles.
As Bone said, if you go with a 33x12.5 tire you will need new wheels with less backspacing(or wheel spacers) to keep from rubbing the tires and keeping your turn radius.

|TJspeed||Specs about the Jeep. What motor Trans? What kind of wheeling do you do our plan on doing. I have 33's on a 2" BB (Budget Boost) its coil spacers. But you need more then a 2" lift to effectively run 33's. I'm looking at getting a 4" lift. And what rear diff do you have|

New Jeep driver looking for some advice
I'm sixteen and inherited a 98 wrangler from my sister. I want to get a lift kit and I was thinking a 3-4" lift. I unfortunately don't have tons of money to spend so I was wondering what you all thought would be a good setup. Right now I've got 30" tires and I am looking to go up to 33". Thanks a lot guys!
